The principal asked Tara and Cheryl to host the end-of-the-year party for one of the classes. The class mother wasn’t feeling well and could not find a substitute host. During craft time, Tara glanced around the room at parents assisting their children and those posing for class photos. Later in the morning, couples held hands and cuddled in the corner while the students sang with the teacher.
The thought of her warm, comfortable couch relieved the burning in her chest and kept a phony smile plastered on her face. She made a mental note to ask Jenn and her mother to accompany her at Lilly’s class party so she wouldn’t be alone.
When the party ended, Tara snuck out the back door without saying goodbye to Cheryl or anyone else.
Cheryl called Tara’s apartment five times that afternoon. Tara let the first four phone calls go to voice mail. The fifth call came while Tara showered for work. Cheryl left a message threatening to show up to the apartment if Tara didn’t answer. Fifteen minutes later, she rang the doorbell.
