Changing from Legal Practice to Healthcare Administration
A personal change I experienced that was very challenging emotionally and psychologically was a career change from legal practice to healthcare administration. The decision for a career change happened in 2007 after a near death experience in Cameroon, my home country, during a short vacation. During my vacation, a health scare got me to a local area hospital that had only one attending physician and 20 nurses to take care of approximately 200 patients. The physician happened to be the chief administrator of the hospital and juggled both responsibilities simultaneously. Due to mass shortage in healthcare professionals from my observation and country reports (Amani, 2010) there is inadequate coordination of care, which results in several unwanted patient outcomes. After returning to the United States, I had a strong feeling and belief that I can help to make a difference if I become a healthcare administrator. However, making the decision was not easy due to many envisaged barriers. In this paper, I will explain some of my personal barriers to changing from legal practice to healthcare administration: how they affected my reaction to the change process. I will also describe how the process could have been easier with knowledge of the techniques of change management learned from the Healthcare innovations course at GCU .

My chosen profession is Healthcare Administration. Healthcare Administrators plan, direct, and coordinate health and medical services in many organizations. Depending on specific occupation acquired, several different softwares can be learned. Skills such as administration, customer service, human resources, and accounting are imperative for this career as interacting with people is the majority of this job. With the utilization of health care improvements, the staff will need additional instructions on the performance of equipment and how to efficiently achieve the desired results. Managers or supervisors recognize the need for supplemental staffing and training to optimize patient satisfaction and quality of care. The health care administrator must also focus on changes in insurance policies and rules governing the provision of medical assistance (Shi & Singh, 2012).
Why now? Why are we focusing on transformational leadership? Healthcare costs are continuing to rise. Some of the critical problems and active debates prevalent in many hospital organizations include the rapidly intensifying healthcare costs, funding and reimbursement cutbacks, and concern regarding the overall quality and safety of health care. “Healthcare systems have come under pressure to improve performance and manage productivity” (Botting, 2011). To be successful in the 21st century, there is a demand on healthcare systems to have a vision and executive and clinical leadership to inspire the change process and make the difference between success and failure in change.
Healthcare administration provides leadership and managemnt to health care systems, hospitals, and private or public health systems. There are requirements for most professions in the health industry but with the proper education and certification, most entry-level careers are attainable. Healthcare administrators are leaders so one must be able to handle the responsibility of the job. There are characteristics that can be associated with being a health care administrator. I have learned over the course of the past few weeks that this the career path that I would like to follow and have set a few goals to help promote my career growth. My research has helped me learn many aspects of this profession and what it takes

Now I feel confident that I have found the perfect career path for myself which is a Health Services Manager also known as a Health Care Administrator. In this field it is your responsibility to plan, help, and organize health services within a certain unit or area along with keeping up with the latest healthcare laws, policy, and technology. Because of all these characteristics, Health Services Manager is labeled as an administrative career although it does leak into professional. To go into more depth about this career, the public health practice profile can help you see the purposes and services needed for each task.
Most healthcare administrators can enter the field with a Bachelor’s degree. Healthcare administrators can be Research Assistants, Health Assessment Coordinator, Air Quality Management Administrator, Epidemiologist or Hospital Administrator. Some Healthcare Administrators continue their education by obtaining a Master’s degree and Ph.D. Healthcare administrators plan, direct, and coordinate medical and healthcare services (5 Things You Can Do with a Public Health Degree). They can manage departments, medical practices, or entire facilities. It’s the responsibility of the Healthcare administer to ensure that their department or facility conforms to changes in healthcare law, regulations and technology.
