"Books will soon be obsolete in the public schools...our school system will
be completely changed inside of ten years"(Thomas Edison). Education has
been a fundamental part of human life for thousands of years. Until recently,
technology has given rise to a new way of teaching college students. Technology
is paving the way for a more powerful approach for learning, which
can create both opportunities and challenges. Digital technology can create and
provide students with information in ways never seen before. However with
technology benefiting students needs, it can serve as a drawback as well. Loss of
communication skills and incompatible technology issues are just a few of the
many examples of how digital technology can negative factor in education. The
rapid evolution of technology will hopefully prove to be an advantage with college
students’ achieving their educational studies.
Before technology was introduced in the college classroom, the traditional style of learning consists of long lectures. A lecture is a method where teachers are considered the central focus of the class. The teacher typically stands in front
of the class and transfers the information to the students. As the teacher gives the lectures, students are expected to be taking notes. This raises the issue of students lacking the opportunity of asking questions, or having class discussions with their peers and teachers. If the students find the lectures boring it can also cause them to be less focused. S...

... and focused on the teacher”. Sophie was also asked if using SMART boards in class made her more interactive in class discussions. Sophie answered, “ Unlike long lectures where all the information is being taught by the instructor, SMART boards give me the opportunity to ask more questions regarding the topic.”
In recent years, technology has played an important role in educating students’ to further expand their educational experience. With the surplus of information and programs available on computers and SMART boards, college students are more motivated and interested in learning. However, these digital devices can also be drawbacks to their education as well. In the future they may be faced with an increase in grammatical and punctuation errors.
In her article, Worthen, claims that lecturing the “old fashioned way” is the true and correct way for students to learn in a classroom environment on a higher level. She
Text messaging is a technology that contributes to the great decline of the English language. The English language is often butchered through the use of text messaging. In Orwell’s essay, he states “An effect can become a cause, reinforcing the original cause and producing the same effect in an intensified form” (446). Main stream society is too lazy to correct any grammar and punctuation in a text message, leading to the assumption that it is not important, after all it is only a text message. Thus, this shows the English language is in decline, when society is to lazy to take a few extra second to correct spelling and punctuation errors . One would not be able to write the same way in an academic essay as they would in a text message. If one would do so, that student would receive an F. No English teacher, or for that matter any teacher, would be thrilled nor impressed reading an essay filled with these common texting erors.
Education is defined as, “The act or process of educating or being educated, the knowledge or skill obtained or developed by a learning process, a program of instruction of a specified kind or level, the field of study that is concerned with the pedagogy of teaching and learning, as well as an instructive or enlightening experience” (No author). People begin their education from day one till the day they die. Every day we learn new things in different ways. Whether someone is just telling us some random fact or you are sitting in a classroom being lectured by a professor. The main focus of this classical argument involves the learning that is done in the classroom or lecture hall in the schools of America today. The question arose as to which style of teaching is most effective in sparking the minds of the receivers to make them become transformers of their education? Would the “banking concept” of teaching be more effective, where “the scope of the action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits” (pg. 260). Or would the “problem posing” style of teaching be the most effective, where by “responding to the essence of consciousness—intentionally—rejects communiqués and embodies communications. It epitomizes the special characteristic of consciousness” (pg. 265). In this essay I intend persuade you the audience to take in my experiences and the experience of two other authors, whom I will be showing you later, and take a look from my point of view.
Paul seems to make it out as something that we struggle through as students and can’t bear to hear the teacher say another word. Lectures are important, if done correctly, students do enjoy it. Students can speak their mind, compare and contrast, disagree and agree etc. we shouldn’t throw that away for mere view or thought of active learning. Active learning will not fit all courses, such as humanities, talking about ancient art works is all you can do in a sense because you can’t magically uncover another Picasso in the back of your classroom closet. Seems like the research that Paul provides in her article is from people who have never heard of a good lecture and have failed to observe what really happens in lecture. Her point is not clear. Is she talking about boring lectures? Good and bad lectures?
Mrs. Grubbs frequently wanted students to engage in class activities and discussions. However, some students did not participate because they were afraid of giving incorrect answers. For this reason, she decided to create captivating ways for students to
When it comes to learning the thing that pops up in many people’s mind is boredom especially if they are in a subject they truly despise. Learning can be fun by showing the students how to engage in class discussions that are fun for them as well as making sure the students want to attend class without making them suffer daily. In the short stories, “I Just Wanna Be Average” by Mike Rose and “A Prostitute, A Servant, And A Customer-Service Representative” by Carmen R. Lugo-Lugo they state, how each teacher has their way of teaching and wanting to engage their students. It shows how some teachers will only care to do the basics and not go beyond that like Mike Rose states, in his short story. Carmen Lugo-Lugo states, in her story how the students
The key aspect of teaching is engaging the students. I can testify that I learn best when the teacher is involving me, as well as others, in the assignment. Making the material personal is a useful skill and helps the students learn at a faster rate.
Aside from taking the tests, you have to sit through classrooms that bore both the student and the teacher. John Taylor Gatto, a retired school teacher, claims that this is true “Boredom is the common condition of schoolteachers, and anyone who has spent time in a teachers’ lounge can vouch for the low energy, the whining, the dispirited attitudes, to be found there. When asked why they feel bored, the teachers tend to blame the kids, as you might expect. Who wouldn’t get bored teaching students who are rude and interested only in grades.” Gatto makes an important point about kids who are only interested in grades.
...gs with an outline of the topic, then proceeds to a work assignment which reinforces the lesson and enhances students' learning. Lectures also typically include an element of discussion, wherein students can ask teachers questions directly, for the benefit of the whole class.
Yet, the damage doesn’t stop there, in classrooms where the students haven’t fallen asleep the students usually develop a dispirited, and less engaging nature towards learning. The students are convinced that the suitable mode of learning is through the utterances of a teacher which, undoubtedly, leads to an excessive reliance on professors. Reliance on professors is not necessarily a detriment, but when it prevents students from seeking knowledge independently it transforms them into superficial learners who lack depth of understanding.
As an educator we need to find ways to make concepts interesting to our students. Think about the instructor who stands in front of the classroom and scribbles on the board, completely oblivious to the students sitting in the classroom. The bright students may still do well under these conditions, but the other students often become bored. Is it the responsibility of the students to pay attention to the instructor or is it the responsibility of the instructor to pay attention to the class?
Did you know that the first few minutes of class is the only time a student listens to their teacher? A student listens to a 60-90 minute lectures from classroom to classroom for 200 school days. But a student cannot focus their attention for that long so they ended up losing their attention somewhere else. Someday, this may be a trouble to their parents. Students lacking concentration may cause failure in planning for their future.
It is also significant for students to be taught that knowledge is greatly important to the human race. Lecturing is crucial when teaching, students not only need to be thinkers but objective thinkers. In order for students to be objective thinkers they must be given instruction to obtain the knowledge needed. All core areas of learning are equally important in building an objective individual that has can function well in society; such as science, math, reading, writing and humanities. There must be a balance.
Active involvement in class discussions and incorporating technology are techniques that could be used when trying to engage student’s interests. Interactive based learning provides an opportunity to become actively involved in the discussion instead of just listening to an instructor throw huge amounts of information their way. Using technology is a way for students to become active in their learning. Tools such as interactive white boards enable children to engage in classroom games, view websites, and review problems step by step. As technology is advancing students rely on teachers integrating technology into their lessons more frequently. In traditional lectures the teacher gives a large quantity of material, but if the student is not paying attention, does learning occur? By incorporating learner response devices where students can electronic...
Technology in education is a touchy subject in the United States. Many parents believe that technology will only hurt their child in future, while some believe that technology will help their child. Parents have to be open and must allow themselves, to see what is happening before they make their decision.
