The most prominent change in Metamorphosis are the changes that occur to the protagonist, Gregor Samsa. “One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin”( Kafka 1). The first and most obvious change in Metamorphosis is the physical change as a simple travelling salesman is transformed into a roach. The Samsa family is horrified to see this beast in their household and reduces interaction with Gregor to a minimum. Because of his appearance, he is forced to cover himself with a bedsheet to conceal his insect-like structure when Mother and Grete enter his bedroom. In the exposition, the family is poor and sedentary and completely relies on Gregor to make money. When the family first addresses this issue, Gregor feels a pang of guilt since Mother, Father, and Grete are not in the condition to work. “His father was healthy but old, and lacking in self confidence. During the five years that he had not been working - the first holiday in a life that had been full of strain and no success - he had put on a lot of weight and become very slow and clumsy. Would Gregor's elderly mother now have to go and earn money? She suffered from asthma and it was a strain for her just to move about the home, every other day would be spent struggling for breath on the sofa by the open window. Would his sister have to go and earn money? She was still a child of seventeen, her life up till then had been very enviable, consisting of wearing nice clothes, sleeping late, helping out in the business, joining in with a few modest pleasures and most of all playing the violin”(Kafka 19). Unfortunately, this change of roles in the family creates a stressful atmosphere. Father currently works at a bank and stubbornly “,refused to take his uniform off even at home; while his nightgown hung unused on its peg Gregor's father would slumber where he was, fully dressed, as if always ready to serve and expecting to hear the voice of his superior even here”(Kafka 27). The uniform symbolized Father’s superiority and arrogance since he is the new provider in the family. Grete was formerly disregarded as an important member of the family since she was a child and no longer attended school. She quickly possessed the role of Gregor’s caretaker which gave her value since neither parent had frequent interaction with the roach.
