As Chan Brother Travel is a travel agency that provides tour packages for Singaporeans, it is important for them to have a better understanding of the Singaporeans’ current travel trends and behaviors, so that they are able to take advantage of the opportunities presented. This results in reliance through technology and clinics in Singapore counterpart for scheduling appointments at South Korea. A mother and two daughters, who went for plastic surgery in South Korea, stated that there is a great volume of online information exchange, such as reviews and discussion forums where similar past experiences and procedures were shared amongst members. Such exchanges provide advices on things to look out for or help to answer other members’ enquiries. They can also make an online appointment with South Korea plastic surgeons to discuss about their treatments. (Soh, 2013) Furthermore, Chung (2014) stated that online services such as medical portal helps Singaporeans to contact South Korea plastic surgery clinics at ease. In addition, South Korean affiliated clinics in Singapore offer concierge services, helping Singaporeans to schedule appointments overseas. Singaporeans are also making use of technology such as beauty mobile applications to modify their facial features, which contribute to the rise of plastic surgery. They are researching online such as blog reviews and clinics’ website for more information on plastic surgery. (Varma, 2016) This shows that the use of technology provides more convenience for them in information search and decision-making concerning plastic surgery. Technology not only brought convenience, it also helps them to save costs on longer period of travel and accommodations. Overall, all three articles show that Singaporeans are relying on technology or affiliated clinics in Singapore to make an appointment for overseas plastic surgery. Hence, Chan Brother Travel should leverage on their website and social media platforms to reach out and bring awareness to their innovative travel package. By focusing on its target market’s information search behavior and adjust its communication accordingly, Chan Brother Travel will benefit
One app called, “Plastic Quote” allows the user to upload photos and digitally augment their appearance through various types of online surgeries to achieve desired appearances. We then looked for American plastic surgery apps and also found quite a few which was quite shocking, but many of the apps were games and were significantly less serious than Korean ones, which have become incorporated into the process of getting plastic surgery. The apps differed significantly in appearance, modes of advertising, its capabilities and purpose. We also learned that there are many reality shows and perpetuations of cosmetic surgery and positive ideas attached to it, through Korean television shows and movies. We then are able to compare this with American’s depictions of plastic surgery, or lack thereof, through its own digital spaces, while also analyzing the difference in ideas that these representations are attached with. Through all of this, it became very clear that apps are not the driving factor in cosmetic surgery in South Korea. It is digital media in general, from a culture’s TV shows, digital advertisements, along with the apps that lead to an increasing income of this market by its simultaneously increasing
Plastic surgery is an interesting cultural phenomenon. It is a very controversial subject that many people are fascinated by. Sociologists today use the three theoretical perspectives, conflict, functionalist, and interactionist theory to understand the range of issues and phenomenon in societies. In this paper I will present a sociological analysis of plastic surgery with a brief history on the subject matter.
Have you ever done plastic surgery? Most people say no to this question. However, in Korea, the answer may be opposite. Korea is now the country that is very famous for plastic surgery, and called “the world capital of plastic surgery. Many people from abroad go to korea for taking surgery nowadays because the cost of surgery is cheaper, and there are bunch of plastic surgery clinics. There is even a street with 800 clinics in Gangnam, and the number of clinics actually is reaching saturation point. (HUFF POST, 2015) There are some problems and negative images related to plastic surgery as well. Still, why is plastic surgery so common in Korea? The one of the reasons is because of the fact that their appearance is evaluated so much more than
Cosmetic surgery companies offer many options in which to finance cosmetic procedures for individual of all income levels. There were over 10 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2008, as reported by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). (Surgery, 2009) The statistic mentioned, clearly shows how many of us now would be willing to undergo cosmetic surgery. But, have you asked why? In today’s society, plastic surgery is the number one chosen alternative decision for the augmentation of physical appearance, scar repair and for the repair of a deformity, whether it be a birth defect or disfigurement from an accident.
According to Discourse and Society “Cosmetic surgery needs to be seen as an important social practice because it merges the attention given to the body by an individual person with the values and priorities of the consumer society.” Younger generations are easily drawn to the hype that is presented by the media, and in turn look at themselves as imperfect, and seek to make changes to their body as a result.
In conclusion, the benefits of cosmetic surgery differ between people and situations; any negative thoughts of others may have an effect on a person’s decision to have a procedure done, but it is for the patient to decide if changing their body is the right decision for them. Regardless of the influences on the younger generation, unrealistic ideologies of patients, and moral issues others may have, plastic surgery will continue to be a huge part of society. However, society should be focusing on how to encourage others to seek happiness in whatever they seem fit, rather than choose to destroy the aspirations of others who choose to build a perfect body for
Plastic surgery is one of the most growing fields in medicine. Reconstructive surgery is one of the branches from plastic surgery and it is defined as surgeries performed to restore facial and body defects caused by a disease, trauma, burns, or birth defects (Nelson, 2010). When it first started, it focused on helping people who are having difficulty blending in society. For instance, during the Renaissance era, in the late 1700s, doctors worked on enhancing the appearance of patients suffering from the nose deformation caused by syphilis using plastic surgery. Enabling them to blend in society and cover the disease. Also, after World War I, because there were a large number of soldiers with disfiguring injuries, the United States of America relied on plastic surgeries to improve the life of wounded soldiers (Nelson, 2010). The other branch of plastic surgery is cosmetic surgery. This type of surgery is performed to preserve or restore normal appearances, or to enhance it beyond the average level (American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, 2014). For the last couple of years, Plastic surgery marketing has focused massively on cosmetic surgery procedures rather than reconstructive ones. This type of advertising is having negative effects on society by increasing the number of needless procedures, changing the true meaning of beauty, and harming females’ self-esteem.
...eild, 2010). Most of The Lebanese plastic surgery foreign patients come from Arab countries such as Gulf, UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia but there are also some patients arriving from United States and Europe (Neild, 2010). El Khoury (as cited in Neild, 2010) who describes the plastic surgeons work during holiday similar to the work of restaurants during holidays as they are very busy, reported a twenty five percent increase in work due to foreign patients in 2009. Similarly the Lebanon’s representative at the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic surgery announced a twenty percent increase of the plastic surgery’s business due to outlandish patients (Neild, 2010). Additionally, the fact that banks such as Lebanon’s First National Bank began offering loans for cosmetic surgery is an indication of how it boosted the country’s economy (Neild, 2010).
My research paper will explain the benefits of plastic surgery. People often have a lot of doubt when it comes to plastic surgery, but it can actually have many positive attributes, both physically and psychologically such as improving one’s health, lifestyle, and confidence
In Asia, cosmetic surgery has become more popular, and countries such as China, India and Thailand have become some of the main cosmetic surgery markets in Asia, in particular for “affordable breast augmentation and sex reassignment surgery, with international patients coming from Australia, Europe and neighboring Asian countries” (Riggs).

Some people’s obsession with plastic surgery is obviously getting out of control. It starts with only getting one thing fixed or corrected but then quickly escalates and before you know it, a face that once was all-flesh turns into plastic. According to a study conducted by Nigel Mercer (2009), “The number of official cosmetic surgeries has more than tripled to 34,000 since 2003”. The two reasons why plastic surgery should be banned are because of its high health risks, and because of the additional pressure it puts on people to look picture-perfect.
