Associativity & Community
The Associativity & Community division works with the community to nurture Centex´s programming and content for each thematic cycle. The community-based organizations can use Centex´s facilities to develop artistic and cultural projects in a variety of disciplines, as well as workshops, conferences, meetings and discussions. All the activities should be completely free for organizations and visitors.
Therefore, Centex through the Associativity & Community division is presented as a Cultural Community Center that provides to the community a series of activities, workshops and spaces for their enjoyment. As a result, art education and development of audiences are expressed through the access and participation of social groups, without any educational strategy in particular, but rather to strengthen from Centex the idea of equal access and community participation. The community-based organizations, in general propose complementary activities to the field of art, as necessary as the work itself expressions, but more focused in social change, civic engagement and cultural development.
As defined by Arlene Goldbard in her text "Looking Before You Leap: Community Arts in Context" the main goal of this kind of community based practice is to reinforce Community Cultural Development (CCD). This “refers to those activities undertaken by artist-organizers in collaboration with community members, employing social imagination and collective creation in the arts to express identity, concerns, hopes, and fears.” (Goldbard, 2005, p.1). In the logic to bring and to attract the audiences, not making them participate in direct decisions, but making them feel important and that the institution is a reference, a space where they can be found and be recognized.
Both realities are comparable and replicable with prudence, because they share the priority to develop more and better audiences. Perhaps the differences are in the forms, mechanisms. Here the strategies are systematized: multiple programs, teamwork, studies of public, etc. In spite of its lack of theorizing, diversification of programs, and resources Centex has been able to take forward with successful practices that seek to bring in a better way to its audiences.
A community is comprised of a group of goal oriented individuals with similar beliefs and expectations. Currently the term is used interchangeably with society, the town one lives in and even religion. A less shallow interpretation suggests that community embodies a lifestyle unique to its members. Centers throughout the classroom will be set up to promote further understanding and creativity of their own communities and the communities of others. The centers will also be organized so that the students will be able recognizing the differences of people and be able to show respect towards all people. To start off the unit, the students will bring in a picture of their families and there will be a map of the city which shows the different neighborhoods and the students will place their family picture in their neighborhood. As can be seen throughout history, art is a powerful expressive model that has the capacity to instruct and construct social change within a community. The art born out of the Chicano Movement of the 1960’s is a perfect example of this phenomenon. In response to the struggle for civil rights for Mexican-Americans immigrants, Chicanos and Chicanas created an art aesthetic that embodied the activist spirit of the movement. As Alicia Gaspar de Alba once stated, “the Chicano art movement functioned as the aesthetic representation of the political, historical, cultural and linguistic issues that constituted the agenda of the Chicano civil rights movement.” By taking an activist approach to challenge the stereotypes, economic inequality and xenophobic shortcomings of the dominant mainstream and by promoting awareness of history, culture and community the visual art of the Chicano Movement served as a political tool to enact social change for Mexican-American Immigrants of all generations.

Community is defined as a group a people living in an area under the same conditions. Realistically, a community is so much more than this definition. It is people and their different beliefs that form a community. In the town of Milagro, Amarante Cordova, Ruby Archuleta, and a town coming together to rescue a fellow community member from jail exemplify the true spirit of what community is.
In this semester, we have visited three public art agencies of NYC, which are the Percent for Art Program, the MTA’s Arts for Transit program, and Creative Time. These public art organizations commission public art to the public. They integrate and apply arts to sites through process and research based on artists’ practices. Public art agencies have similar goal that is to put artworks in appropriate sites and to get response from audiences. In this paper, I will discuss the three agencies we visited vary in rules of agency and patronage practices.
The value of the word community is a social unit of any size that shares common values, or that is situated in a given geographical area, example in Mexico. The need of creating an official history of Mexico, which can be transmitted to the citizens, was the principle idea of the establishment of the Mexican art mural. It needed a medium that could reach a large amount of poor and illiterate public. It is a group of people who are connected by hard and durable situations that extend beyond through ancestral ties, and who usually define that relationship as important to their social identity and practice. The Mexican muralist began as a government-funded forms of public art—specifically, large-scale wall paintings in civic buildings—in the wake of the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920). The Revolution was a massive civil war helmed by a number of factions, which had very specific political and social agendas, to change the hopes and fears of the general population, and the transition of private to federal draining of lakes from villages. The communities may share intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, and risks in common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness. It functions on different levels of society’s social structure, sometimes right on par with current events and other times defying all common everyday needs and resistance.
A Community can be defined as a group of people who don’t just live in the same area, but also share the same interests, experiences and often concerns about the area in which they live. Often when individuals have lived on a street or in an area for a while they become familiar with each other and the issues surrounding them. Children often attend the same schools and grow up together, again sharing similar experiences. In some instances adults may work together, and quite commonly all community members will share the same doctors, dentists, hospitals, health visitors and other public services and facilities.
The aim of community engagement should not be a tick box exercise but to understand the area from a community perspective and tapping into that local knowledge before proceeding with a strategy or an individual scheme. Good community engagement will promote the participation of local residents, business, groups, developers and agencies in order to get a level of understanding of each needs and vision for Rusholme.
