Our country prides itself in the freedoms it brings; we are the “land of the free” after all. Looking on the U.S. from other countries, we are indeed free. However, this freedom comes at the cost of hidden restrictions and cases where we are more imprisoned than free. Largely, times when our freedoms are limited are for the benefit of the greater good; or at least that is what we are told by our government. Freedoms of religion, press, assembly, petition, and speech are all guaranteed by the first amendment of the constitution. Unfortunately these are promises that the government cannot keep. Any content that can be deemed offensive can be tuned out by the viewer, and is in no way forced upon them. Religious groups feel their need to impose their ideas on the world and remove all that is against them from the media. The fact that organizations are able to successfully censor media and create nationwide controversies over images like the mediocre comics in The Insurgent astounds me. These groups think that because they are offended, that everyone is offended, and thus anything offensive to anyone must be destroyed. As far as I’m concerned anyone that attempts to censor something in the media, for religious purposes or not, is performing a selfish act that directly degrades an artist’s work to which other people might like to see. It is like saying that because I dislike tomatoes, I’m going to destroy all tomato crops in Oregon, and make sure tomatoes are banned from television and advertisements. No one will ever get to eat or see a tomato because of me. But that doesn’t make sense, does it? Millions of people like tomatoes. So why is it acceptable to prohibit everyone else from viewing a given image, or listening to a certain song if only a group of people takes offense? My advice is for those that take offense of an image, movie or video game to stop caring. Look away; change the channel; turn the page. There are more imperative things that we as a nation should be worried about than if a religious figure is being defamed or some kid is shooting terrorists on his PlayStation.
