The internet was created for the cold war, in the event that the U.S. were attacked, there would be no communication among the nations leaders, because traditional communication would be disrupted by a nuclear blast. Since that time, the internet survived only though commercialization, the original form of the internet was scrapped when the cold war ended. Now, with this medium in the hands of anyone who wants to pay for service, the Internet has exploded with controversial materials that some people think should be censored. When I started this project, I asked the question should the Internet be regulated and if so, how and why? First we'll look at why the Internet needs regulation, Then how would our government go about doing so? There are several issues that are controversial with the internet. There is pornography, racism, and hate material floating around out there that is accessiable to children all too easily. For the purposes of this paper, I will only discuss the pornography issue, since talking about all of the censorship issues would take more than a short research paper to discuss. In early 1995, a research team at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania released one of the most revealing studies into online pornography. The value of study titled "marketing Pornography on the information superhighway" is realized mainly due to its massive sample size. There are several issues about pornography on the internet that were highlighted by the study. The research team surveyed 917,410 "sexually explicit pictures, descriptions, short stories and film clips". Of special intrest were usenet newsgroups, which are basically electronic forums. It was found that 83.5 percent of the digitized images stored on these newsgroups were pornographic pictures. This finding indicates that there clearly is a substantial amout of pornography on the net. However, this doesn't answer the question, how easy is it to find? In the same study, The student used a search engine called "Altavista", typed in the keyword "sex", and 616,156 matches were returned. Of the first 20 only 2 links were pornographic sites. Next, on the same search engine, the keyword "tits" was typed in and 69,920 links were returned. Of the first 20 of these links 17 were to pornographic sites. After looking into one of the sites listed, it was clear that is was used for exchanging child porn. This shows that it is likely that a minor would come across these sites because of their juvinile desire to look up dirty words.
Pornography is considered by many to be an unwelcome and distasteful part of our society. However, I argue that it is necessary to voice the unpopular viewpoints, under the Constitution. This paper is a defense of pornography as a constitutional right of free expression, under the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. In illustrating this argument, I will first define pornography as a concept, and then address central arguments in favor of pornography remaining legal and relatively unregulated – such as the development of the pornography debate throughout modern US law, and how activist groups address the censorship of adult entertainment.
Censorship of the internet is a very important topic. There is quite a bit of things shown on the internet that man people think little kids and premature adults should not be able to view. Many people view things every day that they should not be aloud to in my others people eyes. This is becoming a growing topic in teens life’s today. Things such as pornography and violent attracts on people such as murder and many other things are viewed every day as a threat to society. People are very much outraged and very concerned.
The Internet distributes more information than any other medium in the world. There are several problems that have emerged along with the Internet, “As soon as the public began to use the Internet, people began to express concern about its use” (Clark 1). Some groups feel that the World Wide Web is dangerous because of it’s open accessibility, whereas other groups see that the Internet is something that can be used to share knowledge globally. The Internet should not be censored because censorship would restrict Americans’ first amendment rights; regulations have been tried and have failed in the past, and there are better methods of education and protection than censorship.
“Children start using the internet at the average age of three and most to spend twice as much time online as their parents” (Ward, 2013). Through the information age, the internet has become an invaluable tool. We have information at our fingertips in record time, but not everything on the internet is appropriate for everyone to see. Pornography, hate speech, and writings meant to incite violence are making their way to children’s computer screens every day. Scary, but we can change this. Internet filters can change this. Personal computer filters exist today and will help prevent children from accessing inappropriate material, but children also use the internet away from home. Libraries, schools, and community centers all offer internet services to children, but are they safe using these resources? The federal government should require by law that all public or government-funded computers have filters to block the access to material deemed inappropriate or objectionable for children. This would help protect children from exposure to inappropriate materials outside of their home.
Freedom of speech has always been an important issue in American society. With the advent of the Internet as a high-speed communication device, this issue has become even more prominent in recent years. This paper will explore the issue of whether the Internet should be censored. Additionally, it will investigate possible methods for undertaking this censorship.
The Internet started out as a tool for transmitting information to learn and study. Free expression on the Internet is one of the things that makes the Internet so great. People can get information on a subject from many different areas. This gives the chance for people to see an issue form other points of view. The Internet has developed into a vast medium of knowledge with many users contributing to its growth. With the growth of the Internet, many people have seen it as a source to express their ideas to the public. Some would even view the Internet as a virtual community, and say it is a democracy. People argue that with such freedom, the Internet should be censored to protect children form pornography, and others from sites that may concern 'objectionable'; material. There are people who live under the 1st Amendment and they use the Internet as an outlet to express their ideas and to incorporate ideas from others. Censorship of the Internet is wrong because it obstructs other people from accessing what they want to see and it inhabits people's free speech. Censorship on the Internet has been a growing concern for the past three years. The wide range of information available has made it a tempting target for those who want to control what a person can see and read. The Random House Webster's School and Office Dictionary defines censorship as, 'An official who examines books, films etc., to suppress anything objectionable';. (CD ROM) The next question is who is going to decide for the millions of users on the Internet what is objectionable for them to see and read. The Internet has developed into a vast medium of knowledge with many users contributing to its growth. In this country, many activists for censorship on the Internet mainly have one thing on their minds. They want to protect children from pornography. Although I view this as big concern, there is a grater issue at hand. Since censorship involves all forms of expression, censoring the Internet would hurt many people. The Internet is an international community; we must view it as pertaining to other countries, not just the United States. Not all countries have the privilege of living in a democracy and under the Bill of Rights. As a result, the Internet has brought a new sense of freedom to most people who oppressed by tyrannical governments, or those that disagree with a government but are not allowed to express it.
My concerns about Internet censorship prompted me to write "Internet Censorship is Absurd and Unconstitutional." In the essay, I outline why I believe that the Internet should not be censored in any way for two reasons. First, any law advocating censorship of the Internet is too broad and unenforceable on this global information medium. Second, Internet censorship is a breach of First Amendment rights for those users residing in the United States. The essay will provide insight into why self regulation is the only viable solution to the problems that have and will be presented to the Internet.
This paper explores the pros and cons of government involvement in controlling the content of the Internet. Everyday technology is getting more sophisticated, meaning that nowadays it is easy to explore about a certain issue via online connection and be near the world. In the present, as long as you have Internet connection, you have the ability to have access to all kind of information that is posted on Internet. There is a huge debate whether internet should be regulated or not, and this is excepted to continue in the upcoming years. Those who support the information epoch, tend to consider Internet to be essential and productive in educating its population. However, those who don’t favor content on the internet want to build limitations since they think that some of the content is unnecessary and which might have the power to negatively influence people. As a matter of fact, some of the governments don’t find reasonable for all the information to be posted on Internet, thus they want to censor some of it based on their beliefs. In this case, government as the ruling power selects certain issues, which they think might harm national prosperity. But, this action leads to empowering more the government and leave citizens behind. Llog time ago, our word have suffered form inequalities and now its time to respect and give everyone equal voice. Democracy is what the world values and aimed to achieve throughout years. Freedom of speech and equity is what people have always needed and are willing to fight for no matter what. As long as government tries to do the opposite, then there would be conflicts and disappointments among population. The Internet is a free domain as it should remain as such. Therefore, it can be argued that gove...
In this paper I am going focus on some of the fundamental issues regarding porn on the net. Also, because there has been a lot of controversy over an adult web site called "thewetlands.com" I'm going to use it as case study throughout this paper. Lastly, I am going to conclude with some possible solutions that I think will contain this explosive issue while preserving individual liberty.
Sex, Erotica, nude women, three some, these are some keywords for finding pornography on the internet. The censorship of pornography has a positive affect on the United States of America and is a good thing because pornography leads to crime, pornography has no positive effects on society, and censoring pornography is not against the constitution.
The Internet is a method of communication and a source of information that is becoming popular among those who are interested in the information superhighway. The problem with this world we know as Cyberspace, the ‘Net, or the Web is that some of this information, including pornographical material and hate literature, is being accessible to minors.
You hit enter, waiting patiently for some information about the White House to come up so you can begin your report for Social Studies. The next thing that comes up isn't exactly what you're looking for. Naked women, horses, whips, and other devices commonly used for sexual acts of dominion and bestiality pop up on your screen. You know your not supposed to see that, but there's just a little bit of curiosity that makes you look around to see if anyone is watching. You continue on to see what else is behind that screen. This is a commonly found scenario of Internet Pornography.
Parents believe that the Internet censorship is protecting our children from accessing pornographic material and harmful information. The visiting of sexually sites by 40% of Children is either on purpose or accidently (DeAngelis, 2007). With home Internet, 32% of parents use Internet filtering software to prevent children from watch dangerous sites. As we know, sometimes when they search on the Internet about a specific topic, they will get what they are looking for, but it may contain some bad pictures (Roberts). For example, it is too easy for children to search about sport’s picture, and they will see a few porn pictures appear. Also, these terms; toy, pet, woman, or girl will output many pornography sites That makes parents worry about children’s morality. So based on that parents who suffering from that bad materials, they can take a strong action to protect their children in...
The Internet as we know it is based upon the principles of being “free and open”. No single government, company, person, or entity known to man has complete and absolute control over the web (Google - Take Action). However, as with any medium of knowledge, there will always be those who wish to censor it, for better or worse. Censorship can be defined in many ways. In the context of the Internet, censorship may be defined as the act of suppressing or controlling the access and flow of information to achieve a means. This is a deeply ethical issue because the unrestricted flow of information can be a dangerous thing. However, it is also a philosophical issue pertaining to the concept of free speech.
When the internet started in 1989 it was a place for the educated and the responsible. People used mainly for educational purposes and as a place to seek for like minded individual who had common viewpoints. Fast forward a decade or so and the internet had become mainstream. It now a place most people would consider the absolute definition of freedom. A place anything and everything go. Of course with that kind of freedom comes great danger. Cyber bully, unrestricted pornographic, many inappropriate content, and what the government feared most, gathering of anti-government rebels who spew government secrets and attract others to their cause. With these things on the internet many people believe that there should be some form of restriction on the internet, some form of censorship. I believe that they are wrong due to many reasons. The internet shouldn’t be censored due its very nature being a place where information is accessible to even the average man. Censoring the internet is equivalent to censoring the news which against the First Amendment, freedom of speech, freedom of press, and freedom of petition/assembly, freedom of religion, and freedom of association. The First states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. The Internet should not be censored, because the information on it is important to someone, in all cases. Anyone should be allowed to post whatever they want, as part of their rights for freedom of speech and freedom of the press. If you do not like something on the Interne...
