Cemetery History: When the city of Los Angeles was a small city of a population of 28,285 the Angelus Rosedale Cemetery was founded as Rose Cemetery in 1884, making it 133 years old. In 1993, a funeral home called Angelus Funeral Home bought the cemetery and renamed it Angelus Rosedale Cemetery. The Rosedale was the first cemetery to service all races and religions. It was also the first to adopt the design scheme of lawn cemetery, along with trees this cemetery has many Mausoleums, and pyramid crypts. In 1887, the cemetery opened its first crematory making it the second crematory in the United States. The first cremation was on June 16, 1887 who was Mrs. Olive A. Bird the wife of an esteemed doctor. By 1913 the cemetery had performed over 2,000 cremations. In the beginning the cemetery was mostly used by LA mayors and other important or rich families but as time went by many different ethnicities and people of all social classes were buried here. Along with civilians this cemetery features a section dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the Civil War. The athlete I chose is Natasha Watley. She is a professional softball player and the first African-American female to play on the USA softball team in the Olympics. She’s a former collegiate 4-time First Team All-American who played for the UCLA Bruins, the USA Softball Women’s National Team, and for the USSSA Pride. She helped the Bruins will multiple championships and also holds numerous records and one of the few players to bat at least .400 with 300 hits, 200 runs, and 100 stolen bases. She’s also the career hits leader in the National Pro Fast pitch. She won the gold medal in the 2004 summer Olympics and a silver in the Beijing Olympics. She was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

Not only did they rally white troops from their athletic performances, they were able to do so from their voices and personal life. They began to voice their displeasure through various media outlets. Their public outcry to end social injustice and race based discrimination came started to become a popular topic of discussion all over the country. They took a stand and were rewarded for their actions as race based discrimination is abolished and blacks have the same status as whites. Black athletes are becoming more and more recognizable all over the world as some become the faces of their sports. Sports came as a form of entertainment for many, but for black athletes it ended up being the most treasured source to reconstructing their race’s lives in America.
More of our children should be aware of these great historians. African Americans that have made major contributions in the field of science that should be discussed, studied and taught to our society to educate new generations of the vast majority of these great scientists. There are a variety of areas in the science field that African Americans have participated in. There were Chemists, Biochemists, Biologists, Physicists, and many others. There were people like Herman Branson, an assistant professor of chemistry and physics at Howard University, who helped prepare many young students for the science field.
The statistics are truly mind-numbing as more than four hundred thousand people have been buried at Arlington National Cemetery since the 1860s. There is an average of thirty funerals a day, and more than four million people
In the time of slavery there were several people who had an impact on freedom and equality for African Americans. Some people were Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and W.E.B Du Bois. W.E.B Du Bois was a great inspirational spokesperson. He quoted, “To be poor is hard, but to be a poor race in a land of dollars is the very bottom of hardships.” He lead his own movement and it was called the Niagara movement. He was associated with the N.A.A.C.P. He wrote books on his studies. He was a tremendous black activist.
History has been full of men and women who have achieved great things for the cause of racial equality and justice in America. Figures such as Harry Truman, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr. have had great impacts in this area in recent history. I would add Harper Lee to this list by her writing of the 1960 novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, with the impact that the fictional lawyer Atticus Finch has had on real lawyers and the justice system.

On June 2009, a pit was dug to construct the Weymouth Relief Road unravelling a gruesome discovery, a burial area for Vikings. It was discovered in Ridgeway Hill near Weymouth, Dorset (South West, England). All the bodies in the pit have been decapitated and their skulls thrown to one side of the pit. According to archaeologist the pit is a burial compound for Viking mercenaries. 54 skeletons and 51 skulls lay in this area hence receiving the name, the Headless Vikings of Dorset.
