Driving is one of the most common activities that people perform, although using a cell phone is something many people do all the time. However, it is when people combine the two that problems arise. The world is becoming more technologically advanced and it is making the risk of distractions while driving more significant. People just want to be involved and stay ahead of the crowd. Every person has a cell phone and they use it. When people wake up, the first thing they do is check their phone; they read text messages, check Facebook and Twitter. People put their phone before eating, bathing, or working. However, these devices should not be able to put someone and everyone around them in danger. In a survey, ninety-eight percent of people state that they believe they are safe drivers; however eighty-one percent of people admitted to talking on the phone while driving (Sherzan 219). Sometimes people are not aware of their common activities becoming a problem. People believe texting, talking, or even Facebooking on the phone while driving is easy and does not put them in harm. Thomas Sherzan states, “According to the United States Department of Transportation’s website on distracted driving, over a half-million people were injured and almost six thousand people were killed in accidents involving driver distractions in 2008” (219). They are coming up with new policies to help their employees be aware of the dangers of cell phone usage while driving. An author states that, “Most importantly, employees must see and hear that top management follows and supports the policy” (Cell 19). If people are being pushed from outside of their conscious and in the real world, then cell phone use while driving could possibly stop. If employees are risking their jobs by texting and driving, then people will think twice before performing the tasks. People may not care about their life or the lives of others, but they definitely care about their money. Employers remind their employees of their own danger, but also of the danger to the company and the public (Cell 19). People must be cautious of how their actions affect others, and become selfless. “Cell Phone Use While Driving & Employer Liability” states, “Employers must enforce policies through stringent penalties, employee monitoring, and blocking technology” (19).
