Every year thousands of youth in the United States die, not by car
accidents or diseases, but by their own hands. Every 90 seconds a teenager
commits suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15 to 25
year olds. Suicide accounts for 12 percent of the mortality in the adolescent and
young adult group. Males are more likely than females to follow through with
suicide. For every successful suicide there are fifty to one hundred adolescent
suicide attempts. More than five percent of all teenagers try to commit suicide.
Many factors contribute to teenage suicide.
Most teens who attempt suicide are in a deep depression. This
depression can be caused by two major factors. These include stress and
significant loss. Stress causes most depression. Stress itself has many factors.
Two of them include pressure to succeed and stress from relationships. The
pressure to succeed may be to get high grades, get a good job, be accepted into
a prestige college, or to excel, “win” in sports. The significant loss may be of a
job, loved one, or health.
Equally important to depression is low self esteem. We live in a
society that emphasizes a high standard of beauty. The newspapers,
magazines, movies, and television are all filled with images of beautiful, “perfect”

College sports are a major revenue producing industry. Athletic programs and their student-athletes can achieve national recognition and generate millions of dollars in revenue for their university. Colleges use this revenue to invest in players, pay for their education, and provide state of the art training facilities, which are used to improve their athletic performance. As revenue driven colleges begin to prioritize athletics, the emphasis on the quality and standards of an undergraduate education are diminishing. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Surgeon General and National Action Alliance for Suicide, revised the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP) in 2012. In which, they classified suicide prevention interventions into two categories: prevention targeted at the level of the individual and prevention targeted at the level of the population. (HHS, 2012). For decades there has been a debate on student athletes and their drive to succeed in the classroom. From the very beginning of organized college level athletics, the goal to want to succeed in athletics has forced students to put academics to the back burner. In spite of the goal to want to succeed over a hundred years of attempts to check limits of intercollegiate athletic programs on colleges' academic standards still seems to struggle to this day. This brings to surface one of the most asked questions in sports, “What effect does college sports have on academics and economics?” Herbert D. Simons, Derek Van Rheenen, and Martin V. Covington, authors of “Academic Motivation and the Student Athlete” researched the topic on whether athletics and academics benefit each other. Bryan Flynn, the author of “College Sports vs. Academics” poses the question “Should institutions of higher learning continue to involve themselves in athletic programs that often turn out to be virtual arms races for recruiting talented players who bring big money and prestige, but put academics to the back burner?” Although both authors agree that sports have an impact on an athlete’s academics, the focus of their argument differs.

There are friends, parents, and peers that are facing the misfortune of losing a young, close, loved one to suicide. Most people don't realize that adolescent suicide is common. They don't want to believe how often this occurs in the secure environment found in the small towns of America, as well as in its largest cities.
Most everyone at some time in his or her life will experience periods of anxiety, sadness, and despair. These are normal reactions to the pain of loss, rejection, or disappointment. Those with serious mental illnesses, however, often experience much more extreme reactions, reactions that can leave them mired in hopelessness. And when all hope is lost, some feel that suicide is the only solution.
