The term dyslexia refers to a learning disorder characterized by difficulty reading. It is a learning disability that alters the way the brain processes written material. Difficulties in word recognition, spelling, decoding and reading comprehension make it even more difficult. This disability alters the way the brain processes written material. People with dyslexia not only have trouble with reading and spelling they also can struggle with writing. Dyslexia is the most common type of learning disability.
There are 3 points of dyslexia I would like to discuss; causes of, symptoms and difficulties that people with dyslexic face. All of these points are important in helping you to understand and learn about this disability.
Let’s start with some of the theories believed to contribute to this disability. Scientist do not know the exact cause of dyslexia, but the they know that genes play a role in the condition because the disability runs in the families. Additional causes suggested for dyslexia are brain damage and inherited neurological abnormalities which are not associated with brain damage. However, the most common causes of dyslexia are believed to be brain injuries, stoke or other types of injury. A brain injury doesn’t necessarily refer to an accident, it can also be a result of lack of oxygen during birth. As you can see there are several things that can contribute to someone having this learning disability.

The challenges that people with dyslexia face can be very hard. My little brother has dyslexia . I have seen first hand the daily challenges he faces in school and also the emotional difficulties he faces. He has to work extra hard to do any work but he is very smart. Kids sometimes treat him different because they don’t understand dyslexia. However, I know that with the right help people with dyslexia can learn ways to overcome it and become very successful. If you know someone who is dyslexic it is important to always encourage them and not make fun of them. Doctor Morgan of Sussex, England, published the first case of what is now known as dyslexia in 1896. My personal experience with dyslexia, with myself and my daughter, has given me great insight into what dyslexia is, what the signs are, and how soon you can detect the potential for problems. A child with dyslexia may not have the problem of translating letters into sound but just struggle with understanding what is being read causing schoolwork to take longer than their classmates. As the child gets older, dyslexia may cause the child to complain about reading, to have trouble remembering dates and require more time for assignments and tests. (Yale Center) When a child suffers with dyscalculia he might find it hard to get the math basics down at a young age. This is because he cannot visualize numbers as meaning something more that just a shape. Often when a new math concept is learned, it is forgotten the next day, causing low grades on tests. Dyslexia has been a commonly known problem in the Unites States. Even though, dyslexia is a mental problem that causes disabilities in reading, most people do not know the truth about it. There have been movies where a person with dyslexia sees letters moving around, yet people with dyslexia do not have disabilities like moving letters around. The truth is that there are plenty of misconceptions. The myths going around of what dyslexia supposedly is, is not the truth. These myths are just misconceptions and the truths about dyslexia are more complex than what it seems like. Dyslexics have different learning processes and different ways of handling the problems at hand.
Living with the learning condition dyslexia, can be a very hard challenge to face alone and thanks to the essay “Living with Dyslexia” by Gareth Cook, he allows us to see the challenges he faced while growing up. Cook states “I was never able to learn cursive, and I am virtually unable to take handwritten notes while someone is talking.” (158). this is a powerful statement by Gareth Cook as this is a biography on his challenges with Dyslexia. Students in modern society multitask daily by taking notes and listening to the teacher. It is something we are taught how to do at a younger age and we build up our knowledge on how to do it better each year. Cook describes what goes on in a dyslexic’s brain very well… He said “Dyslexia involves a problem with how the brain translates sounds and those funny squiggles on a page.” (159). This statement here shows how valuable language is in learning how to read and write. Without the birth of our language, we could potentially have the verbal capacity of a baby and that would lead us nowhere. Most careers in any field of work demand the ability to be able to speak a language and communicate with their peers. We learn how to speak at a very young age and learn to read and write as the years progress. However unfortunately with Gareth Cook, it took him a bit longer to learn the reading and writing process. The definition of Dyslexia varies based on which research group you are talking to, but one of the most widely accepted ones is from the National Center for Learning Disabilities and the National Institute of Child Health. Imagine your childhood. Now imagine sitting in school and dreading that one moment when your elementary school teacher is going to call on you to read aloud to the class. Imagine that you dread this moment so dearly because you constantly trip over simple words and are made to feel stupid because of it. Before we can expect people to alter their perceptions, they must understand what it is. Dyslexia is a learning disability linked to those who struggle with reading. Although, it seems pretty simple, dyslexia is extremely challenging to identify because it is not defined by one specific thing. Moreover, it includes a wide array of difficulties such as: trouble spelling words, reading quickly, writing out words, “sounding out words in” head, pronunciation and comprehension.
Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability (Dyslexia Basics). It is not because a student doesn’t want to learn. Students with Dyslexia are still students. They can still learn and they still want to learn. Students with Dyslexia have problems with the letters in words, and the sounds letters make. The disorder has frequently been hypothesized to be the result of various sensory malfunctions. For over a decade, studies have made major contributions to the disorder's etiology; however, scientists are still unclear of its specific causal. Initially, dyslexia was thought to be a reading disorder in children and adults (1). Later it was suggested to consist of both a visual and writing component, therefore characterizing it as more of a learning disability which affected people of normal intelligence's ability to perform to their fullest potential (5). In the current research, cognitive and biological perspectives have often been developed independently of one another failing to recognize their respective positions within the disorder's etiology.
Many students struggle with learning disabilities. Two common disabilities are Dyslexia and Dysgraphia. “According to the latest dyslexia research from the National Institutes of Health, Dyslexia affects 20 percent of Americans” (“What is Dyslexia?”) Dysgraphia is difficulty with writing that sometimes accompanies Dyslexia. Students that have Dyslexia and Dysgraphia will struggle with vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation, but there is help.
Dyslexia is a learning disability effecting thousands of students in schools across the world. As with many learning disabilities, dyslexia manifests itself differently in every person. Due to this inconsistency, many people feel it should not be qualified as a learning disability, but because so many students continue to have to overcome their dyslexia it continues to be diagnosed. Thankfully when teachers are aware of their students’ having dyslexia they are able to put supports in to aid their students’ learning. Many strategies exist to aid dyslexic people in carrying out their everyday tasks.
