The first category is 46, XX Intersex. This client would have biologically female chromosomes and internal genitals including ovaries, uterus and Fallopian tubes, but have male genitals appear on the outside. The labial folds fuse together and the clitoris enlarges to look like a penis. The overexposure to male hormones prior to birth is most commonly the cause. If the mother were to take male hormones or if they would have a tumor that produced testosterone, there would be a higher likelihood of their child being born XX Intersex. If the child is deficient in aromatase, this may also lead to it. Aromatase is the hormone that converts male hormones to female ones. During puberty, children raised as girls, would begin to acquire male characteristics (2). The most common cause leading to XX Intersex is congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). The adrenal glands create the hormones, cortisol and aldosterone. Somebody with CAH lacks the enzyme required to make said hormones.
