Poverty can and does happen in any country despite how developed or undeveloped the county is. Of the 113 billion people living in poverty, a large majority of them are women (White 2004:67). We are going to see how this epidemic of poverty has affected the women and children within the countries of Canada and India and what the causes behind this are.
Before we can see how poverty affects the women and children in these countries we must first understand the different ways poverty can be defined. First, there is economic poverty which can be described as the lack of financial resources. India was pushed into the global market in the 90’s by IMF (International Monetary Fund) and in May of 1991, their government started a policy. The “New Economic Policy” this policy was a Structural Adjustment Programme. Due to this program, the value of their currency went down, social development programmes also decreased, and industries were now privately owned. When these social programs were cut back it made it harder for their citizens to receive an education, and healthcare. The effects of this policy were extremely bad for the women in India, especially since they are often discriminated against in terms of how much food, healthcare, and education they receive (Sarap, Das, and Nagala 2013:456). Education was considered nonessential and luxurious, and 62% of the females did not receive any form of education (Argiropoulos and Rajagopal 2003:613). These kids grow up in harsh conditions, they don’t live in adequate housing, don’t receive healthcare and sometimes don’t have access to clean water. A study done on children's poverty shows the poorer the household the more likely the adults will be given priority over children in terms of the distribution of calories (Bartlett and Minujin 2009:4). This can hurt the younger children on a more drastic scale, due to the lack of healthcare they normally have high morbidity rates which result in a higher mortality rate. This leads to a cycle of poverty that becomes hard to escape, living in poverty can make you ill while being ill can lead you to continue to live in poverty since most families lack
