Gun Violence
You turn on your TV and see another mass shooting do you wonder why we still have guns? This is a problem because many people are dieing for no good reason. There is a issue in this country gun violence. It exists because people are not using it for self defence. One way to get rid of the problem is to have stricter gun laws.
Guns are a big problem in the United States. In the United States Guns are not being used how they are supposed to be used for which is protection. The United States has a high gun ownership and therefore has a high homicide rate. “The United States has a much higher homicide rate than just about any other highly developed country, and it also has much more civilian gun ownership.” (VerBruggen) This shows that the number of gun ownership and homicide rates have a strong correlation. On to the next point, The President said this after a shooting in October. "’There is a gun for roughly every man, woman, and child in America,’ President Barack Obama proclaimed… ‘So how can you, with a straight face, make the argument that more guns will make us safer?’” (Doherty) The old president said this and this shows that it is a problem because he is addressing it. These are reasons why this is

This statistic was when they were implementing the common sense gun laws. “From 2005' to 2012, Connecticut's gun murders per 100,000 people increased 66 percent.” ( Doherty) This statistic shows the gun laws are not working and will not stop gun violence. Second Gang violence plays a big role in gun violence. “At 16 years old, Melody Ross was thoroughly enjoying life...Suddenly the loud crack of gunshots filled the air. A feud had broken out between members of rival gangs, and they were shooting at each other—with bystanders caught in the crossfire.” (Parks) As you can see guns are being used to kill people not self defence. Now you know why this problem
Gun violence is a huge problem because of the things that are possibly causing it to occur. Violence like this isn’t just affect the family/families involved, but it affects the community as one. It affects the children of the community the most. For children, being exposed to gun violence it can lead to a deep impact: aggression, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress (The Impact.) Something like this would cause children to stay inside more; they would be too scared to go outside and play. Gun violence is a problem because it’s killing our population. It’s a problem because young children and adults lives are taken before they can even experience “life.” It’s a problem because it’s killing innocent people, not just people who are guilty of something. It’s a problem because more Americans now die from guns rather than cars. It’s a problem because people take advantage of the Second Amendment and their rights. It’s a problem because it’s the second-leading cause of death for ages 1-19 in the U.S. It’s a problem because it’s slowly escalating into something revolting that hasn’t even happened yet. Gun control obviously causes so many drastic problems, but there are courageous measures that have to be taken in order for there to be a
In The United States of America there are lots of problems that are plaguing our nation. Gun Control is a problem that there is lots of controversy over. This is a problem that had a fire reignited under it when on December 14, 2012 a school in Connecticut was attacked. Many legislative bills have been introduced since then. (Focus of U.S Gun Control Shifts to States Year after Newtown Shooting) There are lots of issues that we have in our community with Gun Control that we have controversy over: background checks, age, classes, military guns, pistols, shotguns, and rifles. All of these things are apart of the plague in our Nation.
The Economist states in an editorial that when people can get guns more easily there are more deaths which are caused by guns. There is a research result in 1996 about murders with guns. According to this research, there were two murders in New Zealand, fifteen in Japan, 30 in United Kingdom, 106 in Canada, 211 in Germany. On the other hand, in the USA, there were 9,390 gun related murders (America, 1998). This is a plain fact. Though there is a difference in population between each countries, it seems that there are too many gun related murders in the USA. Firearms-related incidents are taking place even in countries that it is illegal to possess guns. Therefore, it is needless to say that more gun related incidents would be occurring if the government permits gun ownership.
Through two decades ago and in recent years gun violence has increased significantly in the various parts of the United States. There are more cases of children and young adults, engaging in violence. Gun violence leads to the death of many civilians annually. Gun violence touches every segment of our society. It increases the probability of deaths in incidents of domestic violence, raises the likelihood of fatalities by those who intend to injure others and among those who attempt to commit crimes. put children and young people at special risk, and disproportionately affect communities of color. Gun violence harmed all the society and it was a nightmare which produced a culture soaked in blood.
Without sufficient gun control laws, the death rate in the United States is incredibly high. Gun violence in the United States results in thousands of deaths and many times more injuries annually. Many countries have death rates of gun violence at or lower than 200. This, as will be shown later, is quite It is reported that out of twenty-seven developed countries, the U.S. has the highest rate of gun deaths and the number is more than forty times larger than the deaths of Great Britain by guns (O’Brien 1). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2013, firearms were used in 84,258 nonfatal injuries and homicide deaths reached 11,208, suicide rates of 21,175, and accidental deaths by guns reaching a death count of 505 (23). From these similar high death counts from several different organizations, it is clear that the U.S must impose stricter gun control laws. If countries as developed as the U.S. are achieving low death rates from gun violence what is stopping the U.S. from making the same changes? Why not the U.S. too? By the same token, in an interview between Tiffany O’Callaghan and Garen Wintemute, Wintemute states that “It (guns) takes upward of
On December 14, 2012 Adam Lanza, a 20 year old with asperger’s syndrome, shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut . According to the final report by the states attorney’s office he got in the school at 9:30 AM in the morning and shot the principal and the school’s psychologist that went out to the hallway to check loud bangs they heard. He then moved on to class rooms where innocent children were learning and started shooting and by 9:40 AM, just ten minutes later, he took the lives of twenty six people, including twenty children age twelve and below and six adults, before taking his own life (State Report on Sandy Hook Elementary shooting).
Gun violence can be solved with more restrictions, gun ownership, gun control and enforcement of gun laws. “Domestic violence assault with firearms are 12 times more likely to end in death than those without them” proved by research done by California General Task Force of Criminal Justice Response to Domestic Violence. Domestic Violence happens every day, and it can happen to anyone; in a situation such as this one, if a firearm is involved, there are more risks of something more severe or tragic happening. The” FBI reported 5% more increase in NICS checks (185,345) on Black Friday than last year” The Trace. Gun control and the amount of them being purchased by Americans is a reason to consider for what purpose. Another reason gun control should be more efficient and profound is "an online survey of 3,000 people Harvard's injury control research center found that 22% of Americans professed to own guns and 25% of those gun owners of the five or more weapons.” The center's director Dr. David Hemenway in October said that “guns in your hands might lower rates of guns to the side and accidental shootings, but the fact that these gun owners feel they must compile an arsenal raises another set of questions.” “Who are these people and why do they have so so many guns?” Hemenway asked. “And are they
Gun violence has reached an all-time high. After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, widespread concern forced legislators to take a second look at our gun laws. When twenty children and six educators were gunned down, many citizens were outraged and begged authorities to pass more stringent gun laws because with fewer guns, there could possibly be fewer incidents involving gun violence. Many people believe that the widespread availability of guns is making society unsafe. Each year, nearly 100,000 Americans are shot, 32,000 of them die, 47 children are shot every day, and eight of them die, according to the U.S. News Digital Weekly. In order to solve this problem, more stringent background checks should be required by all applicants, restriction and enforcement on the sale of guns at gun shows need to improve, and the availability of automatic weapons should be limited.
Too many innocent lives have been lost for Americans to turn a blind eye to the issue of gun control. Citizens should not fear for their lives on a daily basis; we should feel safe in our country. Thankfully, however, politicians such as President Barack Obama are working to resolve this issue. In a nutshell, Obama’s strategy to reduce gun violence in America involves: requiring all gun sellers to obtain a license and run background checks on customers who wish to purchase guns, making background checks more thorough and holistic, and investing more money into the mental health industry to help troubled
Thousands of deaths a year is not something that should be overlooked. There were 464,033 deaths caused by guns between 1999 and 2013. If guns were only allowed to be in the hands of police or military, that number would be much smaller. Of course, many people would still be able to illegally obtain firearms, but it would be much more difficult. One of these deaths was caused by Dorothy Dutiel, a fifteen-year-old, who shot another fifteen-year-old girl at Independence High School, in Arizona. This is a high school girl. If guns were completely illegal, it would have been much harder for her to get one. Yet another example of deaths by guns, twelve police officers were shot at in Dallas during a peaceful protest against “police shooters.” Five police officers were killed during this peaceful protest. Police officers that were not doing any harm, during a peaceful protest, were killed. This is what guns are being used for. From this, the conclusion can be formed that guns are the cause of thousands of deaths each year, which can be easily
On average there are nearly 13,000 gun homicides a year in the United States (Everytown). Gun violence is committed with the ue of a gun may or may not be considered criminal. Homicide is a crime except when and where ruled justifiable. Gun violence is a problem in the United States. It is a problem because it’s breaking families apart, easy access to anyone, and repetitive offenders.
Gun violence may always be an issue in America. Guns are never going to be banned because the second amendment permits the right to bare arms. However, if individuals invest energy into victims, it might save a human being or counteract the next mass shooting.
“More then 30,000 people are killed by firearms each year in this country”(USA Gun Violence Statistics). Because of the U.S. Government allows U.S. citizens to buy firearms more than 30,000 people are killed each year (USA Gun Violence Statistics). The rate of people dying each year by guns is about to pass the number of deaths by car. Guns are very dangerous and if the legal age of having a gun is 21, then why is it so many teenagers have one. On average, mass shootings occur every two weeks and school shootings occur once a month (CNN). Statistics show that people are mimicking some of the mass shootings that there has been, for example theater shootings have been more and more frequent (CNN). If guns cause such a problem then why are they still legal in the United States? Aside from homicide people use guns for suicide. 15 through 21 years old is the age where suicide is more common then any other ages. Teens should not be able to have access to a gun like so many do.
The National Institute of Justice is one of various agencies that closely monitors crime-related incidents in the US. According to its statistics, gun violence in the country has made a steady decrease over the years. During 1993, the NIJ found a dire 17,075 homicides involved the use of firearms. The number of gun-related homicides since then has claimed nearly 10,000 lives annually. (“Gun Violence”) The FBI conducted a survey during 2011, showing that firearms are used in roughly 7 in 10 killings or 68% of all murders. An article from CNN explicitly summarizes the gruesome numbers, percentages and events related to gun violence in America. (Simon) Regardless of the numbers, it is clear that a staggering amount of violence in the US is due to firearms. America’s gun control policies can be best summarized as being permissive with varying degrees of liberty independent of each state. With so many incidents, it is worth looking at neighboring countries of Mexico and Canada for comparison and to question the origins of the massive amount of firearms in the
“According to National Crime Victimization Survey, from six million non-fatal violent crime that occurred during 2007-2011, 99.2% of the time the victim did not defend with a gun” (Planty). This would mean that if the victim did decide to use the gun, it would unnecessary for the time being to use that type of force. “According to CDC: Injury Prevention and Control, between 1999 and 2013 there were 52% of all those suicides was firearm suicides” (CDC). As a point made in this last quotation, guns are not only a hazard to the public but they are also a hazard to ourselves. Guns put in the wrong hands can be prevented with tighter regulations, such as those proposed in the Obama’s address to Congress. Some, but not all who possess guns could possibly be more of a danger to themselves than others
