The Depth of Procrastination
The dictionary definition of procrastination is the act or habit of procrastinating or putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention. The reality is much more complex. Procrastination, to me, is when a student crumbles due to preposterous amounts of pressure and expectations put on a student in order to shape their success. The amount of pressure put on students harms rather than helps them. So far in my high school career, I have witnessed the competitive nature that my peers embody. This nature radiates and glares. For many students, The notion of endeavoring to succeed but instead faltering causes anxiety, so they procrastinate and evade. In this case, when they are not satisfied with their grades due to evading, they can justify that their grades didn’t reflect their legitimate competences. Other students fear success, unlike those who are afraid of failure. Procrastination acts as a buffer from the consequences of success for many students. These consequences are viewed as rewards by others. However, raised expectations and increased obligations are viewed as unfavorable to these students. Similar to those who are afraid to falter, select students procrastinate in order to bypass confrontation with their authentic extremities. In students like myself, perfectionism induces evasion. Nothing is accomplished because they want everything to be perfect. When they encounter challenges they are afflicted with insurmountable measures. For instance, in Art 2 I was assigned a conceptual-based art project. I based the project on how humans impact the environment. I wanted everything to be perfect even though I was challenged with a new medium. I spent too much time on small details and trying to implement my exact vision that I completed the bulk of the project the night before the due
Most students, like Alyssa, study and try their ultimate best to get the highest grade. According to Richard Holton, weakness of will or the lack of willpower is defined as acting against one’s values or when one is too easily able to reconsider their intentions. Pressure for perfection from peers, parents, teachers and coaches is so unreasonably high that many students don’t think that they will ever be able to achieve it. A student feels that it is impossible to get good grades, be athletic, in multiple organizations, and most of all appear to be happy. Procrastination has negative effects on our mental and physical health, which can lead to poor sleep. Hairston and colleagues believe that procrastination is associated with sleep troubles, an association mediated by ruminative cognitions (Hairston et al., 2016). Participants completed an online questionnaire regarding procrastination; sleep troubles, rumination, emotional state, and biological clock. The results showed that in evening types procrastination positively correlates with sleep trouble, negative affect, and rumination. However, for morning types there is no correlation between procrastination and sleep disturbances. The definition of procrastination according to Solomon & Rothblum is the determined delay of the start or completion of a task (1984). Procrastinators will also differ from those who do not procrastinate in numerous ways. An example would be that procrastinators often fear failure, strive for perfection, may be slightly pessimistic and more anxious, which may become worse when they realize they are procrastinating (McCown & Johnson, 1991) or when deadlines are approaching (Tice & Baumeister, 1997). The personal and realistic problems that result from dysfunctional procrastination are predominantly acute in academics, as the inclination to put off school-related tasks often result in challenging levels of stress (Solomon & Rothblum 1984), on the whole the end of the academic semester would be the peak (Tice & Baumeister, 1997).

It all depends on the person doing the procrastinating. Procrastination is not always meant to happen; sometimes it simply happens because a person is too busy.
