World War two started on September 1st of 1939 when Britain and France declared war on Germany following Germanys invasion of Poland, but the causes of the war were more complex starting all the way in World War one when president Wilson met with Germany to discuss the Treaty of Versailles. The German people were unhappy and thought the treaty was unfair and too harsh. Germany could not afford to pay the money and during the 1920’s the German people were very poor. The people were dissatisfied with the government and voted for a person who had promised to rip up the treaty and his name was Adolf Hitler. Peral Harbor was on December 7th 1941 when the Japanese bombed the navy fleet in Hawaii at 7:55 a.m. Michael Slackman said “The American aircraft carriers should be the priority targets at Peral harbor. Without a carrier force the United States could not hope to challenge Japanese navel domination of the Pacific.” Michael also said that “all types of bombing should be used in the attack. Torpedo bombing promised the most effective results, but American ships might be protected by torpedo nets, and there were doubts whether the Japanese could develop torpedoes to run in the shallow waters of Pearl Harbor.” Midget submarines were perhaps the most unique weapons used in the attack. The torpedo attacks ended within minutes and within the period of time the attackers had inflicted severe or fatal damage to five battle ships. Out of all the ships at pearl harbor there was no ship that suffered has much has the Arizona. The ship lost a total of 1,177 sailors and marines. At the end of the attack the fleet lost five battleships: the Arizona, West Virginia, Nevada, Oklahoma, and the California. The Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Tennessee were less damaged, and the light destroyers were put out of action and those were the Cassin, Downes, Shaw and Helm. In total there were 2,403 dead and 1,178 wounded from the United States. President Franklin Roosevelt then said these famous words “This day will live in infamy.” And declared war on Japan.
