Catholicism is one of the three major branches of Christianity. The very beginning or very first Christianity started Roman Catholicism. Although Catholics believe and trust that the first church was made when Christ was talking to Peter one of Jesus’s apostles. Lawrence S. Cunningham's The Catholic Faith: An Introduction is a difficult book to muster up a response to. One is tempted to quip "there it no there there,"although more accurately I would say that there is little there that inspires much more than an indifferent shrug in response. Perhaps the blame lay in the purpose of the book, which is set out first to not be "an encyclopedia of Catholic trivia" (Cunningham, 8). I was disappointed to read this, since while an explanation of the meaning of the different titles and offices in the Catholic hierarchy, or an explanation of the various vestments and ceremonies may be "trivia" to some, at least it is information. Had I spent my time with this book acquiring a knowledge of these facts, I could claim to have added something to my education, albeit maybe only some banalities, lacking in profundity. Instead, what does the book set out to be? Cunningham seeks to "provide an account, as fully as space allows, of the texture of the Catholic experience and the bases for that experience" (9). I have learned to be a little nervous on reading words like "texture" used in this way; usually the author is unintentionally trying to warn the critically-trained reader away. Doubly so with the word "experience," as in hackneyed phrases like "the African American Experience" or the "Gulf War Experience." Such writings have established that they do not wish do deal in facts, nor in reasoned argument to support their conclusions. They deal in "impressions," to complement the "textures" that they will be skimming the surface of. When it comes to worldviews Catholics and Protestants have the same beliefs. We all believe God is imminent, transcendent, and personal. He created the heavens, the Earth, and the universe that we live in. We were all placed on this earth to glorify, worship, and honor Him. God created us in His own image so that we can know Him personally and have a joy-filled life. He did not make us to automatically love and obey Him, but He gave us a will and a freedom of choice. Since the beginning of time, we have chosen to disobey God and go our own way. This is a result of separation from God and ends in suffering. The Faerie Queene Book I by Edmund Spenser is an allegorical epic poem in which Spenser describes adventures of a hero, Redcrosse, and his achievement in his quest taken on Una’s behalf. His quest is a spiritual allegory; it represents the Christian struggling heroically against many tribulations and temptations—dishonesty, the seven deadly sins, and despair—to some of which he succumbs before finally emerging successful. Although this poem focuses mainly on Redcrosse as the heroic protagonist Spenser’s female characters play an important role in his journey. According to Dashini Ann Jeyathurai, author of Exorcizing Female Power in The Faerie Queene :The Treatment of Duessa in the Book of Holiness the female body is a powerful place of controversy. It is often portrayed as unclear, disguised and frequently misinterpreted by both the male characters and the readers. Jeyathurai writes “Yet, it is precisely the enigma of the female body that lends itself to being the site where power dynamics between the male and the female play out”. Two of the foremost female characters within Spenser epic poem are Una and Duessa. Both characters are very different, each representing two contrasting sides of faith, Christianity and Catholicism; for Spenser good and evil. Focusing on the symbolism of each character and on their differing, encouraging or pessimistic, influence on Redcrosse shows Spenser’s spiritual allegories and opinion of each Church.
