John Duhig Professor Davis REL 205 5 December 2014 Catholic Rituals: The Seven Sacraments Many things in our culture today deal with rituals of the people that lived before us. There are many parallels between World Religions, one of them being the rituals of worship. One Religion that is specifically known for its rituals is the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church has many different rituals that its followers use to practice their faith. Without these rituals of faith the religion would have no unity of worship and be in shambles. Within the Roman Catholic Church, there are many rituals that vary in terms of importance, frequency and world-wide standardization. The standardized rituals deemed most essential make up what are known as the Seven Sacraments. Worship, in the Catholic faith, follows these sacraments through an individual’s life cycle. “A sacrament is an outward efficacious sign instituted by Christ to give grace” (jesuschristsavior.net). Roman Catholics believe that this grace, granted by Christ through the sacraments, will assist them in becoming a more holy, Christ-like person. They do so with the hopes that, upon completion of their temporal time on Earth, they will be guided to the gates of the Kingdom of Heaven. However, the purpose of the sacraments isn’t solely to give Christ’s grace to his followers. In practice, they are utilized to strengthen and teach the faith. They teach the candidate of the sacrament what it means to be a Catholic and the importance of what exactly they are prepared to receive. This is done by urging the receptor to pray on, research, and achieve a personal understanding of the ways of the Roman Catholic Church, as they prepare to receive their respective sacrament. ... ... middle of paper ... ...
