One major issue that is still developing in the world right now and will have effect on other countries is Catalonia gaining independence from Spain. The issue between Catalonia and Spain is still developing right now and is still unclear how it will resolve. However, if Catalonia does gain independence from Spain, repercussions will be felt around the world but especially in Europe. Catalonia is the north-eastern region of Spain which is home to about six and a half million people. Catalonia alone is larger (population wise) than four other states in the European Union (Desquens). They simply just wanted more autonomy from Spain (Marinzel 8). They want the guaranteed right, from the Spanish government, to speak their own language and have their own culture (Marinzel 8). They also want to be able to tax their citizens separate from what the Spanish government does (Marinzel 8). A big problem we are seeing is that whenever the Catalan government brings up a tax plan to the Spanish government they turn it down immediately, which is pushing more people regionalists to secessionists (Marinzel 8). Many people in Catalonia are in favor of devolution along with some other small groups in Spain (Guibernau 62). These people have been pushing legislation at the government which would give Catalonia more cultural autonomy, but the Spanish government is not in favor of this. In recent years however, other Catalans feel like devolution has not helped their cause (Guibernau 62). These people still demand greater cultural autonym and they still believe that the Spanish government wants the same cultural for everyone (Guibernau 62). A solution for these people who do not want to secede but also want less government in their region is there. The solution would be similar to the Asymmetrical Devolution, but with more recognition of their cultural differences and of the different languages spoken in Catalonia (Guibernau
