1. Introduction Case study research, either single of multiple, has recently increasingly been used in a number of disciplines (Creswell, 2007). However, at the same time, there have been increasing critics as well. The critics argue that case study research is problematic, among others lacking of methodological rigor in terms of validity and reliability (Gibbert, Ruigrok, & Wicki, 2008), ambiguity in data collection methods (Verschuren, 2003), and its generalizability (Kennedy, 1979). Despite of the critics, some experts argue that case study offers a better understanding and a more specific inquiry of a phenomenon that is often neglected by ordinary research designs which focus more on the generalization (Creswell, 2007, 2014; Stake, 1995; Yin, 2014). This essay is to review a case study design by Ho, Woodley, Cottrell, and Valentine (2014) in Vietnam. The study is about “A multilevel analytical framework for more-effective governance in human-natural systems: A case study of marine protected areas in Vietnam”. The purpose of the essay is to critically highlight the research strengths and as well as its limitations based on a number of literatures. In doing so, the essay will focus on how the researcher had addressed the issues that have been raised by some critics. The type of research question is what and how, the researchers do neither purpusely modify the behaviour of the phenomena nor separate it from the context as of in the experimental research, and the temporal focus of the phenomenan.
