Our Mission
The Panacea Institute for Equality in Education is a programmatic concept with the mission of increasing educational success in children of worst-off families and in doing so break the cycle that perpetuates generational poverty and homelessness. More than education being a seam through which we tear apart the poverty cycle, it has the ability to empower people to change their lives. Through education people learn the extent of their capabilities and develop the skills necessary to implement their ambitions.
In this respect, the Panacea Institute for Equality in Education’s primary purpose is to increase academic achievement among children by removing barriers to academic success for the most at-risk students. The Panacea Institute

All organizational goals work in concert with each other to achieve this ultimate aim. Breaking down barriers and building communities is an interconnected process. In the process of removing barriers to educational success, the Institute will be connecting families to social services, as well as facilitating dialogue within and between the institutions that provide them. The processes utilized to achieve the other organizational goals will inform research.
A holistic approach also means that all organization goals will be achieved through programs that are robust in scope. Education services go beyond merely providing tutoring or afterschool enrichment programs by identifying and eliminating structural barriers that impede a child’s educational success. Family services will do more than just connect families to social benefits and welfare programs, by providing a space and common goals that allow them to strengthen bonds, learn valuable skills and realize their capacity to participate in and impact the community that surrounds them. Research will be connected to all aspects of the operation. Researchers will work within the organization at every level, talking to families, staff and administration. Additionally they will be looking at statistical data and conducting qualitative research in the field (e.g. shelters and schools) ensuring that data is
meeting educational, health, social service, and parental needs. “Head Start also wants to help bring about a greater degree of social competence in these children (Mallory and Goldsmith, 2002).” The program has met a goal of impacting child development and day care services, and the increasing availability of services offered to low-income families and their children (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2002).

My social justice issue is lack of funding for inner-city charity/private schools and the achievement gap in education. This issue was made very clear to me when I did my Anawim project at St. Anthony Year Around School, an organization that provides income household children in impoverished neighborhoods with the opportunity to attain a higher level learning through year around schooling accompanied with summer, spring, and winter academic programs. Additionally, I’ve personally seen my prior classmates, who have attended high poverty and low-performing schools, struggle through their entire high school experience to achieve passing grades. This is a direct result of lack of funding to properly educate my classmates, many have/will suffer
The evidence-based practice (EBP) movement entered the profession of social work with all of the force and fury of a major revolution (OKPYCH &YU, p.3, 2014). According to OKPYCH and YU (2014), “EBP taps into a long-standing ambition that has captivated and eluded the field since its inception: to forge a service profession grounded in empirical research” (p.3). The evidence based practice that I will like to know more about when working on the macro and mezzo levels is Family Systems Theory. Family systems theory was developed by Dr. Murray Bowen as a way to allow each family member to work together to solve individual issues (“Good Therapy”, n.d.). The lack of equal quality education is producing a generational cycle of poverty in the country that is casting a gloomy burden on our schools and society for the future. Many individuals stay in poverty because they don't know there is a choice and have no one to teach them how to overcome it and become successful. Schools are the only place where students can learn the choices of other social classes. The chances of them overcoming the heavy obstacles that await them without the skills the need are very slim. Their chances of being economically successful in today’s competitive society is small. Those who have had a more extensive and advantageous educational experience will continually overshadow them. “The children of poverty and those who are products of inner city schools will most likely remain prisoners of an extensive legacy of economic and social exile” (Gross 185). The neglect for the educational needs of the children in urban schools threatens the economic well being of the nation. Unless the inequalities in education between suburban and urban schools are diminished, the schools and their students will always be victims of the divisions of race and class.
Child welfare ensures “that children are safe and protected from any harm” (Berg-Weger, 2013). Social workers in this field “protect vulnerable children and help families in need of assistance”, “intervene when children are in danger of neglect or abuse”, and some even arrange “adoptions, locate foster families, or work to get families back together” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2013). This is the second largest area of social work, especially for those with a bachelor’s degree in social work (Berg-Weger, 2013). The primary purpose of child welfare is to keep children protected and safe from harm (Whitaker, Reich, Reid, Williams, & Woodside, 2004). The secondary purpose is to “provide necessary services to the families of children at risk, to improve conditions in their homes and bring stability to their family units” (Whitaker et al., 2004). The compliance of both the core set value service and competence is reflected in the XYZ agency. The XYZ agency networks with local companies such as a local pharmaceutical company, DONOR1 for support for the agency. DONOR1 adopted twenty families, donating boots for all the children, and donated gifts for children and their families on holidays. Providing a service to help those who are unable to have their basic needs met by creating community awareness. In the field of social work you must network in order to gain access to resources, to build relationships, and to figure out how to implement services. Reaching out to the community shows the competence of networking to help make an immense impact than solely utilizing agency resources. In addition to compliance demonstrated at the XYZ agency, the requirement of orientation and training to new staff, volunteers, and interns help everyone to be competent in the service being provided to children and their families. The agency allows the interns to create flyers to provide leadership in promoting sustainable changes in service delivery and practice to improve the quality of social services. The flyers provide a service of awareness so everyone can have the same access to resources. I am a first year teacher and have very little experience and I work in title 1, high poverty school. This year I have implemented equitable chactersitics of creating a safe place for my students, expectations for respect in my classroom, collaborating with other skilled educators, participating in advanced education coursework and attending professional development. I know these are equitable characteristics because students are more likely to succeed in a setting where they will feel safe and respected by others. This is important for all students, but can be especially important for students in low-income families that may have one or more ACES that they must cope with every day at school. Next, collaborating with more skilled teachers and coaches helps me diagnose problems and help reach struggling students.
