Case Study Of John In A Dual Language Immersion

This study documents the observation of a third-grade student who I will call John in a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) classroom setting during a social studies lesson. The setting for the case study was a classroom in Leopold Elementary School in Madison, Wisconsin. Leopold aims to teach multicultural subjects that cherish diversity, and consequently broaden every student’s potential. The school serves a diverse, primarily low-income community of students. The person teaching John during the time that I am there is Ms. Ericksen, who has decorated her walls with posters explaining grammar lessons and techniques.
As stated on Leopold’s website, they serve a culturally diverse population which includes 40% Hispanic students, 28% African American students, 23% white students, and 7% multiracial students. John’s class has 11 Hispanic students out of the 20 students in total. Juan is of Hispanic descent and is intermediately proficient in English. …show more content…

Ericksen had just finished reading a social studies book on building the three different capitols in Madison with her students. She then told her class that they would choose which of the three capitol buildings they wanted to read more about and do a poster on. The class was sitting on a rug in front of Ms. Ericksen in their assigned turn and talk seats. After hearing this, John held his pointer finger up to show that he wanted to research the first capitol building and proclaimed, “I’d like to see about that!” Ms. Ericksen then asked John and his turn and talk partner, who I will call Mary, which capitol building they wanted to research together. Mary is a low proficiency emergent bilingual. John called out, “Oh, first!” while still holding his finger up to indicate he wanted
