ASSESSMENT COMPONENT 6:
TM: INTERNATIONAL CRUISE INDUSTRY
Over the past few years, cruise ships visiting New Zealand has grown drastically. Between 2014-2015 alone, the cruise sector was worth $436 million in value to the New Zealand forecast. This is predicted to grow to a whopping $543 million between 2015-2016. As the cruise ships entering New Zealand are getting bigger and there are more coming, the New Zealand cruise industry will be growing, as well as providing adequate infrastructure. Making these continuous changes is going to have many positive and negative impacts on the country and its residents.
Having cruise ships coming in from either the Lyttelton port or the Akaroa port creates a lot of business for not only the large

With the 2010 rebuild from the earthquake, this was a great opportunity for large companies to replace the small local stores. On the main strand in Akaroa, the stores now consist of expensive jewelry boutiques, a wool shed gallery, a crystal shop and cheese shop. There are no basic, necessity stores which is what the locals would need. This means that they would have to drive into the Christchurch cbd to get what was …show more content…
The foot traffic, tour buses and extra taxis on call create a lot more traffic. The locals have complained about the queues trying to get into the library just to use the free Wi-Fi and how ridiculous the traffic on state highway 75. This is extremely unfair on the locals and I believe that as the cruise industry gets bigger, this problem will only get worse and it is something that needs to be looked into.
To conclude, I believe that cruise ship tourism is crucial for the ongoing growth of Christchurch and New Zealand as a whole. From the business that it brings in, the positive effect on the economy and introducing tourists to our beautiful country. I don’t diminish that there are some down sides like the overcrowding, big businesses taking over and destroying the ocean life. But I believe that all is going well and cruise ship tourism has more benefits than issues. Naturally there is room for improvement but it is important to keep making changes to keep everyone
The reality is that the ship pollutes the atmosphere which harms the historic infrastructure, plunders city laws, harms marine life through waste dumping, blocks beautiful views through violating building height codes, and brings minimal revenue for the city in return. Most importantly, however, the culture of Charleston is slowly becoming distorted. It is imperative that all people (including the government) are informed of the cruise ship problem, as the citizens of Charleston are reaping the complications that are tied to the ship’s entrance. The government’s eyes are jaded to the havoc that cruise ships bring not only environmentally, but to residents as
The industry started a major growth phase in the late 1960s and early 1970s achieving more than 2,100 percent growth. The early goal of the cruise industry was to develop a mass market since cruising was until then an activity for the elite. A way to achieve this was through economies of scale as larger ships were able to accommodate more customers as well as to create additional opportunities for onboard sources of revenue. The global growth rate of the cruise industry has been enduring and stable, at around 7% per year in spite of economic cycles of growth and recession. For instance, the financial crisis of 2008-2009 has not impacted the demand for cruises. This underlines that the industry has been so far fundamentally supply based; the ships are built and the customers are found to fill them through various marketing and discounting strategies.
Greece-based Celestyal Cruises prides itself on a unique ability to showcase “authenticity” in its home country, and in striving to do that exposes travelers not only to popular, bustling ports of call, but also to charming hilltop villages; sleepy, out of the way tavernas; and locally-run businesses that date back generations. With slightly smaller, cozier ships, Celestyal is able to access ports that larger cruise ships cannot – just one of the features that sets this cruise company apart, allowing it to bring travelers to many unexpected and off the beaten path destinations in the Greek islands.
The Two forces currently affecting the cruise line industry are the economic and political forces. These two forces represent threats to the company and the industry because in 2009 the economy of the use was in a downturn and sales went down for that year. The global recession significantly impacted the financial performance of travel companies worldwide. Carnival suffered significant loss. Reduced travel demand as a consequence of the recessionary economy by 13%. As the consumer’s discretionary spending capacity declines, the demand for Carnival’s cruise services would also decline affecting the revenue growth as well.
This report provides an analysis and recommendation of current issues faced by Singapore-based Meli Marine, a leading container shipping company in the intra-Asian market, weather gain a presence in the Asia-North America trade routes through an acquisition of 16 vessels of Teeh-Sah Holdings. On the surface, this opportunity would expands Meli’s business and diversify it’s operations and provide a protect function against a downturn in intra-Asian market. But, this oppotunity will bring Meli lots of economic risks. It would return Meli to its former less flexible model with owning vessels also. I recommend that Meli giving up this opportunity and keeping going current excellent customer service then gradually into TransPacific
First and foremost, let us begin our quest by exploring the economic benefits of tourism in both Hawai‘i and Charleston, South Carolina. There is no doubt that the tourism industry in Hawai’i does have a significant impact on the state’s economy, as it is the second largest revenue building industry with annual profits far surpassing amounts pouring in from health care expenses - currently only lagging behind in revenue by the State of Hawai’i’s number one economic contributor, military defense (Blair 2010). Dr. Leroy O. Laney, Ph.D., and Professor of Economics at Hawaii Pacific University reported that in the year 2008, the tourism industry pumped in a whopping $11.4 billion dollars into Hawai’i’s economy alone, accounting for approximately 17.9% of the state’s total Gross Domestic Product (16). Further analysis shows that the tourist industry also accounts for roughly one-third of the occupations in Hawai’i as well (Conrow 21).
Even though there are money strength Port Everglades have when it comes to business there are still a few weaknesses the company has. For example, to be able to do all of the projects the employers are planning on doing on the Harbor is going to cost about $374 million. To gain the money for the project the money would be collected from port use fees, federal and state grant (port everglades deepening, 2015). Which is money the federal and state could of gave to a small business or to use fix other problems that maybe occurring in the county. When it comes to their Cruise the Port there are a few flaws the some of the passengers who went on their vacation with their family on Port Everglade had encounter during their trip. For example, one

A second strategy that has been rejected is one concerned with the consumer awareness of SGC. Currently, SGC is only advertising to travel agencies. Coupled with segmentation, SGC’s current advertising strategy has hurt SGC in the sense that consumer awareness is considerably low. Only a small portion of the population even knows that Sea Goddess exists. SGC is only targeting those who travel frequently. They may want to target the portion of the population that wants to travel, but is unsure of where to go or what to do. In order for SGC to reach the consumer, new efforts must be made in the advertising plan. Mere travel agency recommendations are not going to be enough to keep SGC alive in the marketplace. Other vehicles are going to be necessary to spread SGC’s message about the luxuries and benefits of this extraordinary cruise. At the present time, only a small number of all travel agencies have the sufficient knowledge that it takes to make an informative sell to the consumer. It may be profitable for SGC to employ some hi...
For New Zealand tourism has a lot to offer but at the same time, care has to be taken not to mistreat it. The social and cultural impacts of tourism on New Zealand so far have been on the whole beneficial but as tourism continues to grow this could change. Non-economic benefits of tourism are maximized when visitors and hosts share mutual interests and when trade is relatively small. However these factors limit potential tourist markets and income. One solution to this problem could be promotion of New Zealand as a high quality destination at a higher price, i.e. less tourists spending more money.

Barbados previously dabbled in the mass-tourism industry, but currently primarily offers a more up-market and luxury product. The success of tourism was traditionally measured in percentage annual increase of arrivals, however this type of measurement ignores important variables such as length of stay or visitor expenditure and seasonal variations. This fa...
The economy can be clearly identified as the most beneficial aspect of tourism. “According to recent statistics, tourism provides about 10% of the world’s income and employs almost one tenth of the world’s workforce” (Mirbabayev, 2007). In Australia alone, Tourism contributed $87.3 billion in 2012, and employed 908,434 (7.9%) people (Kookana & Duc Pham, 2013). Tourism is “one of the most profitable and rapidly developing industries in the world” (Popushoi, 2004). Every year the number of tourists increase dramatically and consequently the revenues from tourism will increase substantially.
New Zealand is often noted for two things: sheep and its incredibly beautiful landscapes. Film producer Peter Jackson capitalized on the natural beauty of New Zealand and has used the land to film two massively successful movie trilogies, both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In fact, tourism is a very large and profitable market in New Zealand. However, there is so much more to New Zealand than what meets the eye. For example, New Zealand is one of the top five dairy exporters in the world. The lands are not only beautiful, but also very fertile. Combined with an agreeable climate for agriculture New Zealand is able to capitalize on profits from a booming agricultural economy through pastoral, forestry and horticulture activities. In fact, around half of all goods that are exported out of New Zealand are agricultural commodities from New Zealand. Efficiency in agriculture is also combined with a sizeable manufacturing and service sector as well as significant growth in high-tech capabilities. According to New Zealand Now’s web page titled “Economic Overview” what is driving this economic growth and success is an openness to trade as well as well defined regulations regarding economic activity. The Commerce Act of 1986 as well as New Zealand’s involvement with APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) are a few examples of how the island economy of New Zealand can provide citizens both nationally and internationally with an assortment of goods and services.
In 2013-14 Tauranga had 83 voyage calls, 25 vessels entering with 83 port days in total. They also had 100 unique passengers and 149,000 passenger port days. Tauranga has established itself as a go-to destination for cruise passengers, with its natural beauty and friendly locals it is not hard to see why. Over the years, Tauranga’s cruise tourism has changed from the 2013-14 statistics, the amount of voyage calls this year has gone down but the amount of unique passengers has gone up to 160,100.
