Child Protective Services (CPS) social workers are tasked with ensuring that children are protected from abuse and neglect. The role of a social worker is not to take children away from their families or create instability in the family life. Instead it is to increase children well-being and family stability. However, if removal of the child(ren) is in the best interest of the family, then these measures must be used to ensure long term family stability and growth. CPS social workers have the authority to intervene and implement a case plan with predetermined goals, refer families to services, facilitate placement into out of home care, and make recommendations on reunification services and/or termination of parental rights. It is also important to take in to consideration each client’s developmental ages and current needs to determine the best approach. When working with the mother it is important to note that she is currently abusing alcohol, experiencing depression, does not have financial stability, and is unhappy with her current partner. The three rapport building and engagement questions I would ask are: “How are you feeling about me coming out to help you and your family?” “Is there anything that I could help you with today?” “Is there anything that you think I can’t help you with?” These three questions help me to understand how she is currently feeling about her situation and about me becoming involved and what she thinks I can and cannot provide in services for her. As this is a case that involves a family it is critical to prioritize the human relationship of the mother and her child. The best outcomes for families are when the stay and work together towards successful outcomes. Removal of the child from the home, can result in destructive behaviors in both the mother and child. “Social workers seek to strengthen relationships among people in a purposeful effort to promote, restore, maintain, and enhance the well-being of individuals, families, social groups, organizations, and communities.” (Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers, 2008) Additionally, the mother must be treated with respect and provided the opportunity to create positive change for her family. “Social workers promote clients’ socially responsible self-determination.
