Case Study Analysis: Terry Hogan Terry Hogan is a 10-year-old girl who was involved in a traumatic bike accident which caused her to miss several weeks of school. As a result, Terry was held back a grade. Since her accident, Terry has been struggling academically and has also begun to display symptoms of depression and anxiety. Terry’s presenting problem was her poor academic progress, yet her underlying problems seem to involve depression and anxiety. Several factors seem to indicate Terry has depression and anxiety. It seems as if Terry’s physiological and safety needs were not consistently met as a child, which may have led to her developing an insecure attachment with her parents. Moreover, her mother seems to be using Terry as a scapegoat to avoid confronting her own problems with her marriage. Her father’s possible depression, issues with drinking, and her mother’s inability to provide emotional security to Terry seem to be contributing to the depression and anxiety she is feeling. CBT is a short-term intervention which recognizes that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are inter-related and can be altered through behavior modification. A pilot study was done on the effects of a group-based, early intervention, CBT program for depression and anxiety in 8 to 11-year-old children. The study consisted of 10 school-based sessions, which were facilitated by a teacher, an education welfare officer and two classroom assistants.
