Lorenc+Yoo provided Cousins Properties with spectacular design work for their entry canopies at 191 Peachtree. They brought us in to take the project from concept to reality. Starting from their design sketches we developed mechanical drawings, and then fabricated and installed the finished design on the existing stone-clad building facades.
Executing a project such as this always begins with engineering what it will take to make it work. First on this list is designing a structure and mounting method to withstand wind, rain and snow. Additionally we created a way to get that rain and snow off the canopies, without simply allowing it to pour over the edges onto people below. Due to the fact, that the main town has narrow streets, lined with boutiques, restaurants, and cafes, there is a huge influx of pedestrians, thus, the importance for education and enforcibiity about safe driving is crucial. In the downtown area, the speed limit is 25 MPH, and on the outskirts of Danville, the speed limits range from 30-45 MPH. The town council makes traffic enforcement a priority by instilling safety and appropriate behavior while driving in Danville. I came to regard this porch as one of several features that distinguished Comfort Island as an extraordinary setting. I thought of my tree houses that never offered a better vantage point or a more comfortable place to sit and relax. I’ve never tired of the bird’s eye view of boats and wildlife that comes into focus from that site. It is simply spectacular. Wicker furniture, convenient tables and a railing with a story to tell are among the accouterments that made this venue more like a nest than simply a place to sit and rock a while.

Looking at the shack now it does seem like much, but the little grey house’s appearance is not as meaningful as the purpose it serves.
Last year, I was involved in designing a roof for a proposed Tate Modern extension in a project sponsored by architecture firm Ove Arup.
