Her friend, Diana Vreeland, the editor and chief of Vouge suggested she design a clothing line. She moved to New York with only 20 handmade dresses. She borrowed an apartment, and showed the dresses to family and friends. Soon buyers from upscale fashion retailers started to take notice. They wanted to buy the entire collection, but Herrera had no company. Armando de Armos offered to back her, and within a few months a design atelier and showroom, Carolina Herrera Ltd.,opened on New Yorks Seventh Avenue. Her first runway show was in 1980 at Mercedes Benz fashion week. A park Avenue boutique, Marthas, agreed to showcase her clothing in the windows. She returned to Caracus and raised capital to fund a better launch. Her first full collection was shown at New York Metropolitan Club in April 1981. Carolina was one of the first to use padded shoulders, because she believed it made the waist appear smaller. She liked to use elaborate sleeves as well. While other designers were designing loose shirts and skirts, she focused on more fitted designs. After she designed Caroline Kennedy's wedding dress, her business skyrocketed. The nineteenth century introduced several great leaders into this world, many recognized by historians today. These men, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and others, have all been honored and commemorated for their contributions. One such leader, José Martí, continues to remain anonymous outside the Hispanic community, and hidden in the shadows cast by these men. His name does not appear in the history books or on the tongues of many proud Americans, for he was neither a citizen of America nor an American hero.

This essay was written in order to find some relation between two great men W.E.B. Du Bois and Jose Marti, and how they strongly believed in not losing one’s self while fighting to adapt and overcome difficult yet exciting new times in the world for both of their respective cultures. Their emotions become evident in their writings, Souls of Black Folk and “Our America” respectively. Both men have the opinion that their cultures may overcome such hardships that they are facing during their respective time period but not by following the path its current leaders are leading them down. Changes must be made and these two men came forward with plans, ready to implement, if given a chance.

People have always expressed themselves through art, some people because they want to make their viewers think, some to protest current issues. Some gain support from the community that outweighs political controversy but some like Diego Rivera are censored due to their statements made through their art like in his piece, “Man at the Crossroads”. Diego Rivera is known for the mural he painted in Mexico City that was destroyed due to controversy.
