My chosen career:
My aspiration for my future legal career is to become a solicitor. This is despite the competition and entry difficulties this sector is known for, which I will address later on. In a practical sense there are two entry routes, which is either through the LPC (1 year course) and then a 2-year training contract or Cilex fast track and 3 years qualifying employment . The Cilex route is to become a legal executive rather than a solicitor. However, the job description of the two is similar and it is possible to transfer . The main reason I consider the Cilex route is mainly due to funding issues, as this route offers lower cost of 3000 £ and the ‘learn as you earn’ principle. The LPC costs are estimated around 10000 £ , which on top of the current fees is a big investment in a future without a job guarantee. In relation to the actual sector, I wish to work in I am still unsure, but I currently aspire towards commercial law. Most sources agree that the most important skills are: “general/academic intellect, good communication skills, teamwork, motivation, resilience, adaptability, flexibility, sector awareness, honesty/integrity and attention to detail ” These skills are fairly self-explanatory and can be considered important for most careers. From the Law Careers event, it was very clear that the legal profession is changing and the competition only increases. It is therefore extremely important to be aware of and aspire towards these skills, especially to keep up with the changing environment, which is seen mainly through the skills adaptability and flexibility. However, it is not just possessing these skills, but also finding ways to stand out from the rest who aspire towards the same
