Controversy of Capital Punishment
“Many see the penalty as barbaric and against American values.” says Joe Messerli in his article “Should the Death Penalty be banned as a form or punishment?” (Messerli) Whether or not capital punishment should be used creates a huge dispute between Americans. The controversy of capital punishment can be understood by knowing what capital punishment is, why people are for capital punishment and understanding why people are against capital punishment.

Americans believe that those who are convicted of violent crime deserve to die (Stevenson). The old expression “an eye for an eye,” is a basis for this. If someone murders another, they should have the same fate. People believe Justice is better served (Messerli). Retributivism says that punishment is necessary to achieve justice (Steffen 9).Capital punishment permanently removes the worst criminals from society and should prove much safer for the rest of us than long term or permanent incarceration. It is self evident that dead criminals cannot commit any further crimes, either within prison or after escaping or being released from it (“Arguments”). The death penalty also serves as a better financial solution versus someone serving a life long sentence. Money is not an inexhaustible commodity and the government may very well, better spend our money on the old, the young and the sick, etc. rather than on the long term imprisonments of murders and rapist(“Arguments”). Execution is a very real punishment rather than some form of “rehabilitative” treatment, the criminal is made to suffer in offence to the crime (“Arguments”) . Many believe that committing murder is a not a crime where a person can be rehabilitated. In America’s justice system a judge or jury determines whether a person should be put on death row. There are exceptions to the death penalty which include; people that are mentally disabled or if a person’s IQ under 65 they cannot be executed (Steffen 15). Over two-thirds of the countries in the world have abolished the death penalty in law or practice (“U.S.”). The U.S. has not extinguished this proceeding. In a different point of view, some people believe that the death penalty is rather expensive (“U.S.”). Attorneys have to spend more time preparing for trials and prosecutors have to allocate more staff because death penalty cases are more complicated. In addition to expenses, the death penalty sends the wrong message to humans. It sends the message that killing is okay and in reality killing is not right (Messerli). Another reason would be the pain and grieving the family would go through leading up to the execution. Avenging the death of the victim does not bring the person back and killing the criminal responsible for the the victim’s death only creates more grievance for another family. In today 's world race plays a huge factor in the decision of execution. Those who killed whites were more likely to be sentenced to death than those who murdered blacks. Since 1977 77% of defendants have been executed for killing white victims(“U.S.”). African Americans make up about half of
