Lethal Justice? Capital punishment in the United States should be prohibited in all fifty states, considering the fact that on average it cost more to execute an inmate than to sentence him or her to a life sentence without parole. America’s influence of the death penalty dates back to 1608 when European settlers coming from Britain had practice capital punishment upon approaching the new world. Captain George Kendall was the first recorded execution in the Jamestown colony of Virginia for being a spy for Spain. There are multiple ways of calculating the cost of capital punishment cases. One way being the amount of the case for example the investigation, trial, and the appeals. Many people who are facing the death penalty cannot afford attorneys must be assigned two public defenders which are payed by the that State before the pre-trial. Since death penalty cases are far more complicated than non- capital cases experts are need for researching for evidence, mental health, and social history which will also add to the cost. Jury selection also amounts to the cost because of how long it takes to find the right jurors. It can take up to weeks even months in finding potential jurors. The reason why it takes so long to find the right jurors is for the purpose of making sure that they can vote for the death penalty or life imprisonment. In addition the appeals makeup a portion of the cost too. When the death sentences is appointed there are mandatory appeals. A repeal of the case means a whole new trial, jurors, more witnesses, and the odds that there will be no death penalty imposed. Lengthy trials, convoluted appeals with many repeals, and the higher security of death row all add up to the higher cost of capital punishment. How the lineup composition should suppose go is during the lineup there should be people called fillers in the lineup. Fillers are non-suspects included in the lineup that resemble the same description the eyewitness gave for the suspect. The instruction that should be given to the witness is that the suspect may or may not be in the lineup and that whatever the result of the lineup is the investigation will continue doing this will take some of the pressure off the eyewitness causing less of a misidentification of the suspect. Blind or blinded administration is where the one giving the lineup doesn’t know what the suspects looks like or even if the suspect is in the lineup. By giving a blinded administration will causes less of a chance of the eyewitness getting influenced for changing the appearance of the assailant.
