My thesis is that Mill is correct in saying that capital punishment is kinder to prisoners than life in prison. Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, is the legally authorized killing of someone as punishment for a crime. The crime that you mostly get the death penalty for is murder. The two main options of punishment are life in prison or being put to death for this serious crime. If you are put to death you are killed in an instant opposed to spending countless years in solitude.
Mill 's argument for my thesis is when you have life in prison you are sitting in jail rotting and slaving away opposed to a quick death. It is more torturous than the death penalty because you are enduring more pain physically and mentally. “What …show more content…

In jail you become a different person contemplating all your values and your life constantly. Being locked away can even cause you to want to kill yourself. Prison can cause you to become insane. You become more accustomed to being in jail and you are never the same as you went in. Also, if you are going to jail because you have killed someone and you are not fully mentally stable then you have a low chance of getting better. You might become more distraught and spiteful. Capital punishment is kinder because the prisoner dies the person that they are and with the choices that they have made. If they are given the time to sit in jail they become more angry with themselves and maybe even physically worn down. They let themselves become a more angry person. Life in prison is worse because you sit in suffering rather than having a quick death. Most people fear dying which is why they think that choosing a life of misery would be better. If you are a criminal the chances of you being scared of death might be very slim. Which means that life in prison is the worse case scenario for you. Capital punishment is only seen as terrible because of society 's views. Since death is inevitable is it better to die a quick death than a slow drawn out one. Also, it is better to not sit in jail because mentally you become worse than better. With the use of capital punishment you die instantly with the same mentality that you had when you committed the crime.
