Glucose, a type of sugar, helps provide energy for most cells in the body. Nerve cells are included in that category. Nerve cells take up half of the energy for sugar in the body. Therefore, glucose levels and brain function, like memory and learning, are very closely related. When the body’s glucose levels are low, energy is low. So, when sugar is consumed, then energy levels will increase. Increased energy levels will lead to a happier mood. While doing this controlled experiment, 10 test subjects rated their mood on a scale of 1-5 before and after the consuming the sugar.

The idea of a “damsel in distress” being saved by her “knight in shining armor” is one we are well familiar with. Voltaire, a philosopher from the Age of Enlightenment (a time of questioning tradition and religion, looking to science and reason) uses this same concept to satire love, in his novel Candide. Voltaire satirizes not only love, but other subjects under question during the Age of Enlightenment, such as religion and the military. Exposing there corruption, Voltaire satirizes his main focus in Candide, Leibniz’s theory of Optimism. Leibniz was another philosopher from the Age of Enlightenment, who’s beliefs differed from Voltaire's. An example of this is Leibniz’s theory of Optimism, which states that we live in the best of all possible worlds. The military, religion and love were all elements used in Candide to satirize this theory of Optimism.

The novel, Of Mice and Men, is one that takes place during the Great Depression. It is a story of the struggle to survive and live on your own in a vicious world where every man is fighting for their own successes. One of the many characters who this applies to is Candy, an old swamper who has been working on ranches his whole life. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Candy is a futile part of the ranch.
