Candles have been used all the way back to 3000 B.C., when Egyptians used torches to see in the dark. The Romans would cover papyrus in beeswax or tallow to see in the church, when traveling and at their residence. In the Colonial times, women found out that they could make candles from bayberry bushes that produced wax. “In 1834, inventor Joseph Morgan helped further the modern day candle industry by developing a machine that allowed for continuous production of molded candles by using a cylinder with a movable piston to eject candles as they solidified” (National Candle Association). People will light up the candles and then leave them to burn for hours. People should not burn candles more than 2-3 hours at a time. “Candles caused 3% of reported home fires, 3% home fire deaths, 6% of home fire injuries, and 5% of the direct property damage in home fires” (nfpa.org). Many people light candles for many reasons, such as a birthday celebration, a romantic dinner or just to relax and enjoy the smell. However, some people do not pay attention to the candles after being lit. “On average, 25 home candle fires are reported per day. More than half of home candle fires occurred when some form of combustion material was left or came too close to the candle” (nfpa.org). Many people use candles when a storm takes out the electricity in a home. Candles are an easy way to have light but one should always remember to blow them out when done using them. Other ways to keep fire safe are never leaving a candle in the reach of children. Not only can it cause a fire, it can always cause severe burning of the skin. Placing a lit candle in the bedroom is risky because people fall asleep in there and can leave the candle burning. Christmas time is the most popular and busiest time of the year to purchase, display and light candles to use them as decorations in a home. Elie survives the Holocaust through a battle of conscience--first by believing in God, then resisting his faith in God, and ultimately replacing his faith with obligation to his father.
