Prior to the World War 1, United States of America was just a developed country, which was lagged behind other countries, such as, Britain, France, and Germany, with a large land and ample natural resources. However, as the World War 1 was caused, USA was required to produce war materials by France and Britain and exported to those countries. Hence, USA gained a huge amount of money and technical skills, and so the country has grown into one of the world’s economic powers. As a result, USA could invest in Canada in order to get raw materials for its secondary industries. However, USA’s investments in 1920s brought more benefits to USA itself than to Canada. There are three major reasons for the statement. First, since branch plants were established, Canadian own businesses lost their opportunities. In addition, the ultimate purpose of USA’s investments in primary industries was to enhance USA’s secondary industries. Lastly, the skyrocketing growth of Canadian economy by the middle of 1920s resultantly benefited USA than Canada.
“Just watch me.”Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliott Trudeau said in 1970. He meant it as he fought to keep Quebec a part of Canada. Not only did he do that, he managed to be prime minister for 16 years, as well as being Canada’s youngest leader at the time. He brought greater civil rights to Canadians, Quebec citizens mainly. His charismatic personality matched his innovative ideas, that enhanced Canada for the better. For his entire political career, not only did Canada watch him, the whole world watched him change the country for the better. He made a radical change to Canada by championing the idea of officially implementing bilingualism. Trudeau was a trailblazer from the moment he was elected.
The strike was generally non-violent. The majority of the strikers were reformist, ("revolutionary socialism", which believes that there must be a revolution to fundamentally change a society.) not radical. They wanted to amend the system, not destroy it and build a new one.
‘Roaring’ is an appropriate term to describe Canada in the 1920s because it was a time of economic growth and radical transformation. It was a time of economic growth because there was a high demand for Canadian raw materials, Canada’s manufacturing industry expanded, and because of immigration, which produced job opportunities and generated revenue for the Canadian government. It was a time of radical transformation because women were adopting new roles, the youth were ignoring traditional roles, and sports were creating a sense of nationalism, which created shock, unity, tension, and pride. Technology was becoming popular and lightened the workload for many people. With inventions like the telephone, automobile, vacuum cleaners and washing machines revolutionizing the 20s, life was easier. This was the beginning of the technological age that led to the creation of today’s advanced medicines and gadgets
The 1920’s were a period of growth for the world economy as many people experienced great deals of increase with respect wealth as well as technological advancements and electricity, which became crucial living standard in countries such as Canada. A boom in the Canadian economy during this time was a result of middle and lower class families increasing their consumption of mass-produced consumer based items. During this time P.E.I maintained a relatively lower growth percentage then other Canadian Provinces as they experienced less of the economic boom. Those living in P.E.I, or the Islanders, were relatively more prone to hardship as most people located in the province at the time lived strenuous and labour filled lives.
In the Midwest, farmers were losing their land to mortgage foreclosures. American tourist deaths were attributed to a terrorist attack. A president known for his effective use of the media governed the United States. The U.S. cooperated in a change of government in the Philippines. Parents and churches criticized motion pictures for eroding American morals. And Appalachian State, after setting a new enrollment record, received favorable publicity in a national magazine. Sound familiar? Think again; you're 55 years off. The year was 1934 in the U.S.A.
The depression years of 1929 - 1939 proved to be the worst, and some of the best years for Canada and Canadians. It was a time of extreme highs and lows socially, emotionally, and economically. It was a time that Canada came into her own being on the world wide stage.
The result of the Second World War fundamentally changed Canada and its economy started booming. There are many reasons for this change and if you remember, World War I also made a big impact on the development of Canada. However, in the next few paragraphs I will talk about how Canada gained much more respect and autonomy from the Second World War than ever before and also the change from a country into an industrialized nation.
This aspect was something which Canadians should still be proud of to this day due to the growing number of inventions. New technologies greatly shaped the look of Canadian culture (Bain et al, 219). Canada was beginning to be recognized around the world for their identity as a country with new products (Bain et al, 219). A few of the products included radios, record players, cars, and many other forms of technology (Bain et al, 219). Especially in the 1950’s, Canadians fell in love with cars, buying 3.5 million of them during that year (Bain et al. 217). By the end of the 1950’s, 66% of families owned a car, with 10% owning more than one (Armstrong et al,137). This led to families being expected to take a yearly vacation (Bain et al. 216). This meant that local businesses like hotels, and stores were also benefitting from this cause as more people were visiting their businesses. All these new items made Canadians happy and they also massively contributed to the economy. Many Canadians bought new homes as well which came along with flooring, appliances, furnitures and televisions (Armstrong et al. 136). It was evident that Canada was beginning to become a modern, urbanized country with the addition of housing. Televisions also played a big role in the development of Canadians. The first television set appeared in 1952, and by the end of the 1950’s, 90% of Canadians owned a TV (Armstrong et al. 137).
Teenage life in Canada during the 1950’s is hard to understand unless having lived there. With this new demographic, many things had to be created in order to satisfy this demographic, such as clothing, music, rules, and schools. Unique aspects of teenage life in this era include a lot of rules, the movie theatre, rock n roll and the way they communicated to each other. Issues teenagers faces include marginalization, condemnation and disapproval. The new demographic helped Canada as it made the “children” demographic smaller, and it gave the teenagers more freedom, independence and they finally felt as they could have their own “stuff” as they would call their music, their clothes, their friends their social life etc.
Through out the 1920’s many inventions were created that altered human civilization. Transportation was successfully mastered. Radio communication was becoming more common and medicine was saving more and more lives every day.
The economic progress Canada made after the war lead to the growth of the country. New industries emerged from innovations of products like automobiles, radios, television, digital computers and electric typewriters (Aitken et al., 315). Canadians quickly adapted back to the “buy now, pay later” strategy rather than careful budgeting during the Great Depression (Liverant). Almost everything that Canadians did was influenced from new inventions; television was the most influential. Canadians conversations, humour, and lifestyle were influenced from television (Aitken et al., 315). The radio revolutionised the way families spent time together and receive information. The movie theaters had an impact on how people forgot about the depression and made life seem better. Many homes in the 1920s also just got access to electricity while many homes were still lit by candle light, but became more prominent as the time period continued. Labor saving appliances of the 1920s made the household chores easy to accomplish than it used to be. The 1920s was enriched by many technological achievements that helped changed the way americans communicated, managed their health, and partook in leisurely activities.
We see this with the invention of the low-cost Model T, flappers redefining. womanhood, silent movies and fluctuating politics. The 1920s brought much change and with it Canada experienced the revolution of changing politics and new ideologies, it was a necessary wave. of rebellious liberation and shifting views, a change fundamental to the future.
