Can People Change?
“You must be the change you want to see in the world” - Gandhi is a quote that applies to The Crucible, as characters change a lot during the course of the play, whether it has to do with themselves or taking action and speaking out against what they think is wrong. In the world-renowned play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the question “Can People Change?” is answered when many characters, such as Elizabeth and John Proctor develop so much making them dynamic individuals (THESIS). In the play, Abigail Williams, a manipulative seventeen year old, leads a group of girls into deceiving the entire town of Salem by saying that the Devil is alive in there. As a result of these lies, innocent people are convicted and many lose their lives. John Proctor, a farmer, faces many tribulations during the progression of the witch trials, and as the play progresses he is not afraid to speak …show more content…

They change for the better, and both learn lifelong lessons throughout these changes, such as John who learns to trust himself and that in the end, integrity is all that really matters. Elizabeth learns to love and forgive not only herself, but others as well. They are both dynamic in the sense that they have opposite personalities then what they had at the beginning of the play. People can relate to Proctor and Elizabeth because change is inevitable and realistic, while not changing like Parris, who is never heard from again when being voted off minister of the church, and Abigail, a girl hungry for attention, is unrealistic and not the route people want to take. Perhaps Abigail and Parris will never find their true meaning in life. This is because instead of changing and admitting their faults, they run away from their problems. Abigail and Parris’s legacies leave only cowardness and weakness behind, while Elizabeth and Proctor’s legacies represent strength and most important,
