Cameras are used every day to capture significant moments that want to be remembered. It has transformed through time and influences pop culture today. According to Merriam-Webster, a camera is “a device that consists of a lightproof chamber with an aperture fitted with a lens and a shutter through which the image of an object is projected onto a surface for recording.” A camera is a form of art invented in the 1830’s and today photography is a multi-billion dollar industry (Tolmachev). A camera is a revolutionary form of art where any moment can be captured, but can be shadowed and altered through editing to what is perceived as real. According to the article, A History of Photography Part 1: The Beginning by Ivan Tolmachev, the first photo taken was in 1825 by Joseph Niepce, a French Inventor. The Kodak Brownie was introduced in 1901, and became the first middle class camera in the market. This camera only took black and white photos, and color photography became valuable in the middle of the 20th century. But the first color photo was taken in 1861 by James Clerk Maxwell. Cameras have the option to edit, enhance, or change a photo. If it is not through the camera, is it through an app or Photoshop. Photos are being altered and negatively influence the way we see things and society. The question is, is that actually how it looks like? In our society today, people change a photo to a way we as a society want to see. Photos are changed to sell better to the eye of the people. Editing photos negatively impact society today, it hinders what is real and encourages people to change the way they look. People use apps to edit their faces, bodies, and makeup.
