Settled in the end of the fifth century, two groups established themselves in what is now present day Cambodia. The Champa controlled the central and southern part of Vietnam and the Funan is the southernmost part Vietnam and present-day Cambodia. Influences from both China and India were obvious as dance and music spread throughout the area. Ruling on its own till 1864 when the French absorbed it into French Indochina Along with Laos and Vietnam. For nearly a century, the French exploited Cambodia commercially, and demanded power over politics, economics, and social life. It was not until a leader Norodom Sihanouk proclaimed Cambodia's independence in 1949 which was later granted in 1953. Cambodia fell into chaos during the 1970’s as General Lon Nol and his connections to the Khmer Rouge brought Cambodia into a genocidal age. For a decade Cambodia was surrounded by despair and carnage until the reign of the Khmer Rouge ended in 1979. Slowly rebuilding of the nation began as outside countries and organization such as the United Nation helped to get Cambodia back on its feet. Plans were made for general elections by 1993 which lead to the constitutional monarchy that the country has today. With its cyclical and oppressive history, Cambodia future is optimistic with the economy growing rapidly due to industries such as tourism, textiles, oil and the traditional farming. Slowly the nation reaches to find its place among the other powerhouses in Southeast Asia and around the world.

From the 17th century on, Vietnam had never had a steady period of peace or prosperity. Vietnam fell into a civil war between the 16th to early 19th century between three powerful lords, Trinh and Nguyen, and the Tay Son brothers. Next, French influence and invasions took over Vietnam and established Fre...
The history of Vietnam was not recorded until 111 B.C when the Chinese first entered the capital of Nam Viet (Buttinger 25). For a thousand years, the Chinese ruled Vietnam which as a result led to “Chinese cultural and technical influences” to which brought “new tools, and new materials… and Chinese customs and learning…” (Buttinger 28). When the French first came to Vietnam in 1669, they came because they saw how the Dutch and Portuguese were doing so well in trading with Vietnam so they wanted to make a profit as well but when they landed onto the shores of Vietnam, they realized that they came too late and trading in Vietnam became unprofitable so they left (Buttinger 60). Although, French trading with Vietnam did not start until 1669, French influence was already upon the Vietnamese due to the Jesuits.
In April of 1956 the last remaining French troops would leave Vietnam. After over 200 years of influence and rule, the French at last realized that the occupation and control of Vietnam was an unreachable goal. In consideration of the many blunders (both militarily and political) , and the outright ignorance of the French high command, any efforts to stabilize Vietnamese nationalism and to maintain french rule over Vietnam were thwarted. Thus the French were defeated by an inferior force, and the question of how such an anomaly could occur lies within the 200 years of rule, and the many mistakes made through out way.
Vietnamese invaded Cambodia in December of 1978, resulting in nearly 130,000 more Cambodians to migrate into California, catching the atten...
Dai Viet was the former name of Vietnam. Dai Viet replaced the name of the chinese; Annam and they made political, economic, and cultural progress. Ngo Quyen was the head of the new Vietnamese province. For half a century, independence didn’t bring peace or government stability. In the early 11th century, Vietnam was unified under Ly Thai To. Ly Thai To was the founder of the Ly dynasty. Dai Viet fought against the Islamic and also butted heads with the Cambodian Empire. Because of the wars, Ly dynasty started to decline. The Yuan Dynasty came from China in 1279 and they sent armies more than 30,000 soldiers to take back the Red River Delta to the Chinese. Draining
Unlike many other European countries that sought out the territory in Southeast Asia merely for increasing their power through trade, the French first began interactions with the region as early as the 17th century. Alexandre De Rhodes began an expedition to the Southeast Asia region with the desire to expand the Jesuit missionaries throughout the region to further their belief. For many years until the 18th century, the Jesuits expanded and created many missionaries throughout the region. The 18th century had brought an astronomical expansion in the trading markets throughout Europe and Asia as all the European superpowers began colonizing all of Southeast Asia to further their trading “empires.” The French would also begin to participate, not at the same level as countries such as the Netherlands or Great Britain, but more in moderation. At that time the French believed to confine their participation in Southeast Asia to religious advancement and moderate trading. It wasn’t until the 19th century until things would begin to take a turn and the French would become a major participant in Vietnam’s history.
In October 1946, the French proclaimed their intention of regaining the north which meant that the Viet Minh would have to fight for their self-rule and communist system. The war started in November 1946, when the French attacked the port of Haiphong and slaughtered 6,000 citizens. The French tried to win over the north by offering them 'independence'. However, the people would not be allowed to do anything without French permission. A new leader of the country called Bao Dai was prearranged as a concession. Russia and Eastern Europe refused to recognise his rule; they claimed...

Cambodia’s education is one of the lowest in the world. At the end of the Pol Pot era formal education had ceased, and many educated Cambodians had left the country or had been killed (EIU Country Profile). 65% of people over the age of 15 cannot read or write (CIA World Factbook 2000).
The topic that I will be discussing is Thai culture. In this, it will include areas that influence this culture. First, I will give you the geographical information of the country of Thailand. The second area that I will look at will be language. Language is an extremely important part of culture and some say that one cannot be found without the other. After that I will inform you about customs, traditions and taboos in Thai culture. This is a very important part of culture and is what shows the differences between cultures. Then I briefly tell you about the government and some national symbols, such as the flag, the symbol, colors, anthem, dress, and national day. Next, I will explain about religion in Thailand. In most cultures there is religion, but in Thailand it is interwoven into its whole culture and it is hard to separate the two. One other thing that I will include in this paper is a link to a page with pictures from my trip to Thailand.
Many years of war have had a major impact on the educational system of Cambodia. During the Khmer Rouge regime, teachers and all other educated people were killed, schools were destroyed and books were burned. This has resulted in countless of obstacles to the point where it challenges Cambodia’s aptitude to provide quality education access to the youth. Lack of schools exceptionally in slum areas like Phnom Penh has a high number of young children with little to no access to basic education. For these young children a lack of education can mean a life of poverty, limited opportunities, and poor health. In these slum areas poverty forces these kids to drop out of school to support their families. Many families can’t afford the cost of transporting their kids to school so instead of having their children to pursue an education they have them working for low wages. To offset these inequalities in Phnom Penh the Attitude Centre for Education (ACE) NGO is working to implement free education programs for the youth. The primary focus of ACE is to provide the youth with the confidence and leadership skills to bring about positive change in Cambodia. ACE works to create a generation of leaders and supports the youth to becoming effective role models in their communities.
After a long series of wars with neighboring kingdoms Angkor was sacked by the Ayutthaya kingdom and abandoned in 1432 because of ecological failure and breakdowns. This lead to a period of economic, social, and cultural stagnation. In the nineteenth century a renewed struggle between Siam and Vietnam for control of Cambodia. Before 18 century, Vietnam was a tributary and vassal of China. However, it changed when France invaded Indochine, which Vietnam was included in it. French started to get into Vietnam’s affairs after le Traité de Versailles, which was a treaty signed between France and Vietnam. In the end of the Second Opium War, France still could not set up a navy base in China, therefore, France paid more attention in Vietnam and wanted to obtain her. Meanwhile, suffering with civil wars, China must make reconciliation with France. Not wanted to distract the army to France, they signed up a Treaty of Saigon, Traité de Saigon in 5th June 1862. The most remarkable point of the treaty is cessions of Bien Hoa, Gia Dinh, and Dinh Tuong to France. French were also allowed to trade freely along the Red River. Nevertheless, Bien Hoa, Gia Dinh, and Dinh Tuong were important to Vietnam, Vietnam wanted to ma...
