In the movie The Preacher kid, Angie King is a character who plays preacher daughter. By her father been a preacher, she has values and rules that she must obey. Somewhere down the road Angie King decide that she doesn’t want to be label as a preacher child and follow her dad values and rules. Mrs. King wants to join a traveling gospel show; however, her dad doesn’t want her to join traveling gospel group. Mr. King knows that she can’t handle all the circumstances and situations that she may occur out there on her own. King decides to leave her family and friends behind. Once Angie gets out on her own she forgets all the values, morals and rules that her dad instill in her. Angie starts using drugs and start having intercourse with the lead singer. He doesn’t respect her at all. Living own one on, one must remember all the values that he or she was taught. Values play a key role in deciding which career to choose. Social work as a career one must remember the values and rules they learn. Social worker has the ability to determine their personal value system, and how it fits with social work values and ethics, which determine the role of being a great social worker.
First of all, before one can consider their career path one must have some types of values to keep them grounded. As for me, my first and most important value is honoring thy mother and father. Social workers focus on the interactions of people and environment in order to improve conditions to help restore and maximize the capabilities to function in society. They must possess the ability to make ethical decisions within various contexts of the profession. This can vary from clinical work in either a mental health facility to child welfare in human service agencies.
As a social work professional, you must take into account your own personal values before you can be an effective worker in this field. Social workers sometimes need to put their own values aside when working with clients who don’t share their same ideals. Clients are diverse and are not going to always have the same values that the worker has. Social workers need to be professional and adhere to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) guidelines when working with any client.
The professional social worker will also work from. A systematic skill base and evidence based practice, but also a value and ethics based practice. Values are basically how professional people should treat service users with a deep understanding of right and wrong. Vigilante (1974) (cited in Barnard, A.2008) calls values the ‘fulcrum of practice’. These values and ethics benefit the service user as they receive a professional service in the professional relationship.
If I begin to think in those terms I will lose the ability to see issues form the perspective of others. For example, I may value helpfulness, but if there is a place or time in which I am not properly trained or informed then I am not operating with competency. How helpful am I being if I provide inadequate service? I must always reevaluate my role, and the way my values impact my practice. There could be serious implications in my work as a social worker if there is conflict that arises between my values. I feel that considering if harm would come from me acting on one value instead of another in a time of conflict may be what informs my choice. For example, if my value of respecting the dignity and worth of a person means respecting an individuals cultural norms, but this cultural norm is threatening the safety of an individual then I will have no choice but to go against that value, and protect the safety of the person who is being threatened or harmed.
The values that impact my decisions include: accountability, truth, honor, spirituality, reliability, kindness, ambition, family and compassion just to name a few. My grandfather was a successful business man in the 1930’s through 1980’s. He was a firm believer that you are only as good as your word. He did business with a hand shake and a smile. Teaching his grandchildren that if a man’s word is of no value, neither is he. Furthermore, he taught us the importance of sticking with your fundamental beliefs and principals.
