I have chosen to write this essay on the speech given by Pope Urban II at the council of Clermont in 1905. The speech was a call for the Christian people to help their fellow Christians in the east fight off the invading Turks and Arabs. The council did not preserve the speech itself; however, this document is a written report of it by a man named Fulcher of Chartres (Bongars).
Previous to the speech, Pope Urban II had received a message from the Byzantine emperor asking for help to fight off the Arab invaders. So in this speech, the pope urged everybody in Christendom to carry out their duties as Christians, and go to fight for God. The pope claimed to all of his followers that anybody could have their sins and mistakes forgiven, and they could be in the good graces of God.
The focus of the speech was to encourage the Roman Christian people to fight under the pope’s orders. According to the Coffin/Stacey textbook, the Crusades were seen as a means to; “bring the Orthodox church back into communion with the papacy […], to embarrass Pope Urban’s greatest enemy, Henry IV […], and, by sending a large contingent of fighters overseas, Urban hoped to achieve peace at home.” So basically the pope used the peoples’ religious and somewhat superstitious fears to persuade them to fight for a few causes that the people didn’t know about. They believed that they were fighting for God, and for the good of Christianity, but really they were fighting to make the pope and Christianity even more powerful.
This document helped me to understand the subject by connecting the material that was covered in class and in the textbook with a major moment that caused an important event in history. In class, we briefly touched on the first crusade, because, although it was technically successful, the success only lasted for about 50 years. Despite the short lived victory, however, the first crusade was an important event in western history, and this speech was what established it. Without this speech, the first crusades may not have happened, and history since that point in time would have been completely different.
I chose this text because I though it was interesting how one man could make a speech that would move hundreds of thousands of people to feel obligated to make a long journey to fight somewhere, and most likely would be going to their death.
Urban said, “in all these seven battles, by the aid of the Lord God, we conquered and most assuredly killed an innumerable host of them. In those battles, indeed, and in very many attacks made upon the city, many of our brethren and followers were killed and their souls were borne to the joys of paradise.” Urban promised forgiveness of all wrongdoings and basically a free ticket to paradise only to fight and dye in the crusade. Although there was no compassionate relationship between the “eastern and western branches of Christianity,” Pope Urban II of Europe was aware of the Islamic threat to the Byzantium Empire and was subject to support the eastern branch after he heard about the oppression forced on his fellow Christians. He says, "there is work to do, you must help your brothers living in the Orient, who need your aid for which they have cried out many times"3 Fulcher, 52. He gives word that these "brothers" (Christians) are being threatened by the Turks who must be pushed back to Persia. Urban will grant remission of sins for their services. In closing, Fulcher tells how Urban II presses on to say, " Let no delay postpone the journey"4 Fulcher, 53. Fulcher of Chartres' account of what happened at the Council of Clermont is a great piece, full of detail.
After hearing about Pope Urban II’s pronouncement, huge amounts of people are now moving across Europe! However, most of these first responders seem to be religious people as opposed to lords and knights. Since taking back the Holy Land is not as important to these knights and lords, it is understandable that they haven’t been rushing to fight.
Riley-Smith adequately proves his argument that although the idea of crusading was not a new one; the outcome of the first crusade had a direct impact on the ideas surrounding a holy war. His book, The First Crusade and the Idea of Crusading, is a well developed and coherent argument that is neatly organized and concise, allowing the reader to gain a good understanding of the topic. This book was an excellent choice for first year university students, as it was an easy read, and very easy to identify the main points and arguments of each chapter.
The First Crusade was a widely appealing armed pilgrimage, and mobilized a vast conquering force at a time when the Christian Church was moving towards centralization and greater political influence in Europe. The Church gained a wider audience more accepting of its leadership, benefitted economically, and developed its own militarily force. The selection from Usama Ibn Munqidh’s Kitab al-l’tibar otherwise know in English as the Book of Contemplation is a book in which Usama provides a series of short vignettes as a testimony to his experiences in the medieval Middle East and the Crusades. Through his writings the reader is able to get a Muslim account of the Crusades. It is largely a personal account so many details are left out and much background knowledge is assumed. It also is not the most unbiased source as supported by Usama’s frequent utterence that “Allah render them [The crusading Christians] helpless” (Ibn Munqidh 197) Usama also makes no attempt at analysis or understanding and just writes exactly what he observed without asking questions or delving deeper into the myriad differences he discribes. On a whole though it provides a great overview of the experience of many Muslims (especially the upper class, of which Usama was a part of) during this unstable period of invasion and political fragmentation in the Islamic world.
In document 1 by Pope Urban II, he stated that the Christians in the west should defend their fellow brethren in the east. He went on to state that Romania had been conquered and had to be taken back from the Turks and Arabs. The subjects had to fight for the land that they stand on to continue being good Christians. If you died fighting for this, you would get instant remission of sins, meaning you would be forgiven for all of their sins. The first Crusade was a success and shows how the Pope had powers not even emperors or monarchs could have over nations. “The First Crusade enabled the papacy to put itself at the forefront of an immensely powerful movement and grasp the moral leadership of Europe” (Bennett).
Since this paper is my reflection, I will be honest by stating that I am nineteen years old, white, a male, and have been raised in a Catholic family just outside of Louisville, Kentucky. Now why is this important? This is important because the only viewpoint of the crusades that I have studied, prior to my experience with Maalouf, has been from the Christian point of view. Until now, I have yet to place myself in the shoes of those on the opposite end of the sword, shields, and Jihad. History is a touchy subject for me because I have come to learn there is always another side of the story to learn from. This fact leads to the first main thesis of Maalouf’s adventure.
Why would Christians in the West be moved to embark on a dangerous journey to fight in the Holy Land after hearing Pope Urban's speech at Clermont? What could be a more noble cause then fighting for God? The “unclean” are destroying churches and defiled alters and using them for their own. Wouldn’t it be the duty of any Christian to secure the Holy Land? Pope Urban II promotes the will of God to send these soldiers on their journey to save the holy land. They were promised if they died in battle that they would be released from any of their unrepeated sins.
The Children’s Crusade needlessly ended the lives of many. Although they had no other reasons than regaining Jerusalem, it was a lost cause. Stephen of Cloyes and Nicholas, though with a true purpose, caused only more pain and sorrow. Children left their family behind, “This they did despite the wishes of their parents, relatives, and friends who sought to make them drop back” (Halsall). Some parents encouraged their kids to go, but at the same time, even more parents tried to keep there kids at their side (Halsall). The Pope himself at one time stopped Nicholas’s Crusade and told them to go back home (Trueman). Even though the Crusade failed, and none of the children ever were heard of again, England once again remembered the importance of the Holy Land (Trueman).
During the Crusades, the Pope’s aspiration for power originated from political reasons. In 1095, there were many problems in the Christian land the Pope couldn’t do much about. For example, there was a great deal of fighting between knights and nobles, and the Pope had very little power (Visual, NA). When the Church tried to reform it by ordering a truce, it did not work. So when the Pope saw the holy land was controlled by Muslims that did not allow them to go there, he decided to use that as a way to restore order in the Church (Crusades, NA). He knew it would solve the problems he was faced with because it would send all the fighting knights away to war, and if they captured Jerusalem he would have control over the most sought out land, giving him power (Crusades, NA). He knew that many knights won’t want to leave the land when they can claim the land that another knight left when they went to war. So to ensure more knights’ participation, he promises remissions from all sins committed. In order for the crusades to begin, the Christians needed to gather an army to travel and fight the forces of Muslims. With all the power being held by monarchies at this time, the church needed to be cleaver in order to gain troops to put their lives on the line. To gain the support of these warriors and dedication of men, Pope Urban II (1088-1099) challenged those morals of men by telling them to grab their weapons and join the holy war to recover the land of Jerusalem. It was not the challenge that convinced men to take part in this war. The promise of “immediate remission of sins” attracted the men to stand up for their religion and beliefs while at the same time, promising them a trip to heaven when life comes to an end.
