I was excited the first time I walked into the 49ers Bookstore. It was big and fancy looking inside with two floors, certainly much “cooler” looking than the one at Long Beach City College. I think unwrapping a book for the first time or opening a brand new textbook and hearing the pages stretch out from its first fold is one of the greatest nerdy feelings a student can experience. Buying books for my education has always filled me with great satisfaction, I love to collect books and have them as reference for the future. However buying school books has become a struggle and a financial burden for me, especially last semester. I consider my financial circumstances today very dire, nevertheless I try to keep myself hopeful and positive as the semester progresses. Fall semester was my first as at CSULB, it was very exciting to know that I was halfway through my studies and with …show more content…
I am very happy that CSULB has this opportunity for us students and personally I feel this scholarship would alleviate some of my financial hardship and empower me to continue making school my number one priority. I am convinced I am making a good decision for my future by increasing my focus on school, but, I also recognize that I cannot do it on my own and I must make every effort to stay ahead of my expenses. The 49ers scholarship would supply me with the extra income to buy and keep my books at the end of the semester instead of renting them. This is a luxury that I cannot afford to make every semester especially with the low amount of hours I am currently dedicating to work. The center for scholarship made this opportunity in part to “increase access to books” and so that students “may focus on their academic endeavors”. Earning this scholarship would do exactly that and more and for my
LJI308 is a potent and selective inhibitor of RSK. The p90 ribosomal S6 kinase (RSK) comprises a family of serine/threonine kinase which is expressed in various human cancers. RSK is the cytosolic substrate for the ERK (extracellular sianal-regulated kinase), involved in direct regulation of cell survival, proliferation, and cell polarity. Previous studies have demonstrated that RSK pathway is important for the growth and proliferation of cancer stem cells [1,2].
It has been a dream of mine to attend Texas Tech University, thanks mainly to their agriculture program, but I also chose it because it is the closest university to my home, a small farming community around eighty miles from Lubbock. I will be living in a dorm, which creates another financial need. Housing and dining are not cheap, and this scholarship would help lighten this financial load.
With the advances in technologies there has been many bookstore close because we are able to download books and read them in our hand held devices. It is sad to see so many businesses close due to the advances in technologies. What I do like about being able to download books is that we no longer have to find somewhere to store the books because we can save them in our devices. Since we are also able to view movies on our electronic
There are two types of people in this world, the first ones are, the people who doesn't really like reading books because most of them doesn't have pictures on it, and they find it extremely boring. Then the other type of people, who simply gets lost into their book every time they read, because they just simply love reading. Some of them even say that when they're reading, it is taking them to a different world that only their imagination can create. That is why some people consider their books as their most priced possessions, because of how much it means to them and also some books can be rather pricey. Indeed, books can really be expensive, however, you might be too astonished when you see the following books, because they're considered
"As Costs of Textbooks Rise, E-books Emerge as More Affordable Alternative." The Daily Illini. Brittany Gibson, n.d. Web. 22 Apr. 2014.
My dad taught me that books could be my teachers, my mom taught me that our backyard could be my classroom, and my sister showed me that you could bring books into the swimming pool. I did not know it when I would spend hours in the pool reading a book that my parents weren’t encouraging it in vain, but my family life, for good reason, was centered on books. We were the planets orbiting around one sun that was the bookshelf. Little did I know that books would be the catalyst to academic success in my early life, and I owe it all to my family. Although a life with a book in your nose might seem boring, I was never bored. Living through the characters vicariously, I explored Narnia with Lucy, attended Hogwarts with Harry, and rode dragons with Eragon. Of course
Scholarships cover the core expenses of college such as tuition and room and board. The new stipends are supposed to close the gap between scholarship money and what it actually costs to attend school.
In a world where most college freshmen do not graduate or dropout, i feel like it would mean to much more to me to graduate and be able to say I got my degree. studies have said that half of freshman will not complete there degree, another study said that 25% of freshmen will change their major before they finish their sophomore year. If i was given this scholarship money it would put me in a place where hopefully I won't become just another statistic. Another reason a college degree is important for me to achieve is so that i will be respected in my work industry of choice. When you are in a place of work, there is always someone who everyone looks up to because they know the most about certain things, but more often than not that person has the highest degree in his or her field. If I was awarded this scholarship i would be more capable of being that person because i would not have to worry about leaving school to figure out how I will pay off my
I choose to challenge myself by taking honors and AP classes. I can overcome obstacles that stand in my way and persevere through tough problems. I participate in school through my involvement in Student Council as an Executive Treasurer, Key Club as an active member, Varsity Tennis, Science Club, Band as Section Leader and National Honor Society. As well as in school, I help out in my community, whether it’s at my church, as a volunteer at the Bitterroot Public Library, or helping to preserve the Daly Mansion. If I am awarded this scholarship, I will use it towards college tuition and I will work hard to pursue my career as an
I would benefit from this scholarship because not only would it help with the cost of my tuition, but the support will also help lessen my worries about my finances. This scholarship will help my parents as well since they are helping me with my college education. During the past two months and currently, my dad has been in the hospital due to having pancreatitis. In August when he was introduced with it, he went into septic shock and that day he had coded seven times. It is a miracle that he is with my family still, and with the support of this scholarship, it would help out a lot due to the medical bills that my family has. As in the past, I will work
The Community Scholarship for Achievement will help me in many ways, for one continuing on to pursue a post-secondary education at a four-year university as a full-time student. Pursuing a post-secondary education is something that I have always dreamed would become reality. To expand my view and fill my head with knowledge, is something worth working towards, so that being said learning is a passion I hold dear and in order to order to accomplish my dream in becoming a zoologist and a veterinarian.
I cannot even begin to express how truly grateful I am to receive this scholarship. It has taken me far too long to muster up the courage and strength to finally pursue my lifelong goal of obtaining my college degree. Although I had always done well in school as a kid, my childhood was a bumpy road, and going on to college after high school was never discussed at home, let alone the importance of a college degree. Once I graduated from high school, I did what I felt was expected of me, I moved out, got married and started a family of my own. It did not take me long to realize how difficult it was to support a family on meager wages. It took a toll on my marriage and I soon found myself a divorced, single mother. Even though I had a good, steady
In conclusion, America provides many ways to help reduce the cost of college textbooks but society is still not satisfied with the outcome. The Open Textbook, Affordable Textbook Act, and book store rentals are wonderful programs, but has its disadvantages that hopefully would be resolved in the 2016 presidential elections. The statistics show that many students across the nation benefit from learning with quality of teaching, the amount of accessibility it provides without having to worry about paying off student loans. School administrations should consider about transferring to an act that would benefit both the school and the students, but also provide more equality to the publishers and students.
Along with these problems, some professors demand a specific edition of textbooks, which would cost hundreds of dollars more than the older version, and the only difference students can find is the physical appearance of the books. The California Student Public Interest Research Group published a study in 2004 that found new editions cost 58 percent more than older editions and newer editions are not that different from previous editions (PresslerE01). Therefore, expenses on text books must be reduced as it has a direct effect on students’ performance. In addition, it can be accessible anywhere at any time, so, students shouldn’t carry heavy textbooks all the time.
I am the first person in my family to attend college. I played for a college level sports team. I am in an honors society at college and I am following my dreams to become an occupational therapy assistant. I can’t say I did this all on my own my family has been a huge help. Another thing that helped me the past two years was knowing I was finically stable due to my soccer scholarships. That helped me stay focused and achieve all those amazing things I never thought I was capable of doing. If I am award the Kevin D. Marlo Scholarship I am going to continue to surprise myself and this college with the extraordinary things, I can accomplish. I have a long road ahead of me but I am ready for the ride. I am very hardwiring and if I were to receive this scholarship I would prove that my academic abilities are endless. It is unfortunate that money can be such a curling factors in someone’s education but that is just how it is. To receive this scholarship, it would show me that all of my handwork had paid off. I am looking forward for my senior year at Harcum next year. These have been the best years of my
