Reading And Reading: My Struggle With Literacy

My struggle with literacy hasn’t been an easy one. I grew up in a poor school district, that barely met the requirements to keep their accreditation. I struggled with writing more than reading. My awful penmanship and slow typing skill, caused me to lose assurance in my literary ability. My loss in confidence caused me to lose interest in reading. Having lost all interest in reading and writing caused me many miserable school years. Over the years, I slowly gained my courage back. Due to one hard working professor who went above and beyond to boost my self-esteem. With proper guidance, you can achieve literacy success.
When I was, young I was a very good reader. I learning to read at two years old. By the time, I was four I could read a biscuit book by myself. When I was in first grade I was beginning to read Harry Potter with some help from my parents. My reading level far surpassed my fellow classmates, my knowledge of words and definitions did as well. My nickname as a kid was the human dictionary and I wore that title with pride. The computers brought on a whole new set of problems. First, I was too slow and no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t force my hands into the proper typing position. I felt ashamed my dad was an amazing typist, he could type anywhere from 80 to 100 words a minute. Here I was only managing 25 words per minute. Secondly, I was a poor speller. What good was it to know all these fancy words and definitions, when you can’t spell them. Lastly, I had a hard time focusing. The result was I got lazy and didn’t want to put forth the effort to be creative with my writing. These issues were contributing factors towards my poor writing style. My literacy has been affect by my past. Over the years, I have vastly improved unfortunately I’m still not up to
