The author of “The Day After”, portrays the most disturbing image of the future through the vivid details of the events occurring in the movie. To summarize, the plot of the movie is pretty much about how nuclear weapons will eventually be the doom of human civilizations. There’s nothing supernatural about a nuclear war, the fate of the world is entirely within our clumsy human hands. What could be more horrifying? In the movie, humans are instantly demolished, just by the radiation of the nuclear bombs, even though there was a great distance. Day after day, this half ton gorilla, Ishmael, opens the narrators eyes and teaches him "how things came to be." He starts out by dividing man into two different cultures. He calls the people of our culture takers and the people of all other cultures leavers. Each culture has a story. In Ishmael's teachings, a story is a scenario interrelating man, the world, and the gods. This story is enacted by the people in a culture. In other words, people in a culture live as to make the story a reality.
In the book Alas, Babylon, the author, Pat Frank, discusses the condition of the human race. Mainly, his view differs from others because rather than write about the countries in a nuclear war, he writes about people living in the countries that are involved in that war. His discusses these peoples’ progress, both technological and moral, as well as their use of power. These topics make the book as intriguing as it is to read.
Through his uses of descriptive language Hersey exposes to the reader the physical, emotional, Psychological and structural damage caused by a nuclear attack. He shows the reader how peoples are physically changed but also how emotional psychologically scared by this act of horror. Through Hersey’s graphic detail of the horror after the bomb and the effects years after he shock the reader while also give the message that we shouldn’t let this happen again. In the book Hiroshima the author John Hersey exposes that a nuclear attack is not simply a disaster that fades away when the rubble is removed and buildings are rebuilt but an act of horror that changes the course of people’s live.
Clearly, these two stories say some very profound things about the human condition. Given the right conditions, there is evil in all of us that is just waiting to surface. And we were all innocent once, but some event made us lose it. Finally, people are all manipulative given the opportunity. These conclusions aren’t just drawn about the characters in the novels. These are things that are true for each and every human who ever lived, and everyone who will live. We are flawed creatures, and through the aid of great writers like these, we begin to realize it. Really, we shouldn’t need them to tell us about ourselves though. Just look at the world around you, and you will know.
The human mind harbors a very rich imagination when it comes to the envisioning of our demise, demonstrating the individual’s appeal towards this notion, because we love to play with the idea of an impending apocalypse and what comes after it.
The film ‘I Am Legend’ and the novel ‘Z For Zachariah’ were chosen to be studied together for my connected text assignment. Originally I chose the film because I enjoyed it; I then matched it to a text based on similarities in theme. Both ‘I Am Legend’ and ‘Z For Zachariah’ are based on the same theme; that of man as the cause of the destruction of the human race. While the settings and characters are vastly different; as is the cause of destruction, both the main characters are faced with tough decisions that must be made in order to survive a major man made disaster. Both characters must deal with the enormity of the notion that they could be one of the last humans alive on earth.
As these ongoing fears were going on during Dick’s time, he was able to predict a nuclear bomb would be dropped and would destroy most of the Earth. When the first atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, everyone was excited as this meant the end of WWII and to the end of all wars. In 1949, the Cold War began between two ideological sides – the United States of America (USA) which led capitalism and the Soviets leading communism. Most of society predicted a turn of events causing ongoing fear of another nuclear bomb to be dropped by either the Americans or the Russians. Those fears grew more when Cuba decided to join the soviets in 1964 which allowed the Russians to set up nuclear rockets and fire to different cities in the USA. This ongoing fear during the Cold War is related back to World War Terminus as Dick presents the effects that would take place if another nuclear bomb would drop. During Dick’s time in the 1960s, he wanted to predict what if another nuclear bomb was dropped during the Cold War and what would have been the consequence of this to happen and he does so in his novel, saying this nuclear bomb will destroy most of our
The word Armageddon can evoke some scary thoughts. The word means to most people the destruction or severe alteration, of life, as we know it on the planet Earth. One thing is for sure, the possibility of Armageddon actually happening is very real, and we as a species are not ready for it. Movies entertain us with their version of Armageddon while governments and scientist research and plan to avoid it. The public at large remains oblivious to dangers that are fact not fiction. God will in some form show us that in the grand scheme of things we are very small and there is nothing we can do to prevent the inevitable.
The fear of the world ending has for a long time, even though the thought isn’t always at the top of our mind nor our biggest problem but it is still a worry that affects many. Whether it's an asteroid hitting earth, a zombie apocalypse, or a killer plague, we often think about what we would do when the world ends. We think about our families and our daily lives taking a turn for the worst. Some people even suffer daily from the fear that the world might end at any second and it's known as the doomsday phobia. Although most of us don’t have the doomsday phobia it is still something that we think about. Some people might say that sticking together through it all would outweigh the theme of will to survive, but that accusation would be wrong. The will to survive in the two stories definitely outweighs sticking together. If sticking together was a more important theme, then Noah in the Grapes of Wrath wouldn’t have left, and Peter wouldn’t have said one of us should die in order to keep the other two men alive in the Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. The will to survive definitely outweighs all of the other themes that could have been used to relate these stories
Vincent Van Gogh is a well known artist from the 1800's and most people know him for his painting “Starry Night” which in my opinion is one of his best pieces but I think Van Gogh's “At Eternity's Gate” could possibly rival “Starry Night” for one of his best pieces of art. “At Eternity's Gate” is a portrait of a man that appears to be distressed and mournful. He wears all blue while sitting on a chair in front of a fireplace. He is in a room which is seems empty. The man in the picture seems to be distraught with his hand covering his face, he is also hunched forward with his elbows on his thighs. The man is wearing all blue with brown shoes. The man has a receding hairline and what seem to be wrinkle on his head probably meaning he is very old.
