Bullying is an act that is an everyday occurrence in some people’s lives. Bullying can be direct or indirect. What this means, is that bullying can be in the form of violence such as hitting and kicking, or in the form of verbal abuse such as name calling and teasing. Manipulation and exclusion are also forms of bullying. Bullying can be taken into consideration as a minor assault, but any form should be taken seriously. Whether it is taken to an extreme, done over a long or short period of time, or only a one-time thing, bullying is bullying and should not be tolerated. I have heard about an episode of bullying myself. My friend back in elementary school was telling me how she witnessed her friend being bullied almost every day during school. The victim was a young boy who was teased about the way he stuttered and was shoved around after class for raising his hand. This went on for about a whole school year until I was told that he finally stood up for himself. He told a counselor what was going on and what he had been through. The counselor immediately told the principle and action was taken. This resulted in a school wide intervention. Fortunately, this young boy was brave enough to stand up for himself and seek out help. Studies about the effects of bullying show that those who bully are more likely to drop out of school and less likely to attend school regularly. Research also shows that those who bully are at a higher probability to be involved with violence, criminality, and delinquency in their future. Bullying has been around for a long time, but the negative influence that it has on society is becoming overbearing. Bullying can occur anywhere, from the workplace to the store, but its main host is the school compound. Bullying in school is a major concern, not just for Americans, but internationally. Some of the negative influences of bullying are depression and anxiety in students, which is causing them to become drug addicts. Also, bullying is one of the major causes of suicide among teens in the United States.

Well Into Adulthood, Study Finds "More studies are beginning to confirm the sometimes serious psychological effects of bullying, particularly for the bullied, like increased risk for depression and anxiety" (Walton). With that being said, Bullying can cause victims to have a lower self esteem and think lowly of themselves. Constant verbal and physical attacks from a bully can make the victim feel very lowly of themselves. Worst of all, these victims will start to actually believe what the bully has to say about them. This can later cause mental disorders such as depression and anxiety to develop.
Bullying is defined as “verbal, physical, or psychological abuse or teasing accompanied by real or perceived imbalance of power” and is usually targets what children perceive as different (Olweus, 1993). Bullying is prevalent across the nation. It has devastating effects on students each day. Bullying is a problem for all students, regardless of race, gender or class. The National Education Association reports that 160,000 children are absent intentionally from school each day because they fear being bullied whether it is an attack or just intimidation by other students. This accounts for 15% of all school absenteeism (Hunter, 2012). Dan Olweus (1993) from the National School Safety Center tells us that bullying includes three parts: (1) Unwanted, negative aggressive behavior, (2) the behavior is repeated over time and (3) there is an imbalance of power or strength. One in every seven school age students will be victimized by a bully or will commit the act of bullying. (Hunter, 2012). Statistics show that 10% of students who drop out of school do so because they have experienced repeated bullying at school (Hunter, 2012).
There are several ongoing of issues that are effecting adolescents in today’s society ranging from low self-esteem, teen pregnancy, and obesity. Also, amongst these issues are the growing concerns and effects of bullying. Its epidemic is also starting to become closely related to the growing numbers of suicide rates amongst adolescents within the United States and across the globe. However, there are several adults that may take bullying lightly thinking that it is just a part of kids being kids. Whereas to an adolescent, bullying can cause long-term effects as they transition into adulthood. However, in order for one to examine the long-term effects of bullying one must be able to define what bullying is and determine the cause and effect.
For the rest of the victim's life, depression can affect the body and the mind. Victims of bullying will also go to the extreme of committing suicide. Every year, 4400 lives are lost to suicide. Bullying alienates kids to the point that they do not eat the same. They end up getting overweight or underweight which is very unhealthy.
The three important components to bullying are as followed; bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions, bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time, and bullying involves an imbalance of power and strength (Olweus1). Bullying by definition is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions. [Why] Bullying has grown new outlets over the last decade. With social media outlets and text messaging added to the game, bullying is not just about getting tormented face to face anymore. Cyber bullying can include sending out mean or threatening emails and instant messages about a person, spreading rumors about someone and also include photos that a person would consider to be humiliating. But the other outlets, such as cyber bullying are definitely not something to take lightly or consider low on a scale of importance. According to the National Conference of State Legislature, boys who are often bullied can be five times as likely to be more or severely depressed and four times more likely to be suicidal. Girls are three times more likely to be severely depressed and eight times more likely to be suicidal. Some children are afraid to go to school, which can lead to poor grades or lack of concentration. It is hard for students to focus at school when they are worried about their bully. Bullying can make school a place of fear and can lead to school violence.
A major effect of bullying is the way it can change the victim 's personality. It may cause someone who is regularly self-sufficient and full of joy to become anxious, and hesitant. It is proven that those students who bully do so merely because they see themselves superior than those being bullied. They use this as a tactic to make juniors fear them and show them that they are not equal in any way. Some will even bully as a revenge of the bullying they suffered in the past.
