Buddhism flourished since the Han dynasty extended its influence throughout Asia. Through this, an increasing number of Buddhist texts had been translated into the Chinese language. As a result a number of different schools of Buddhism had risen at the beginning of the Tang Dynasty. Including one dubbed Tiantai, a school of Buddhist thought founded in the sixth century by a man named Zhiyi. ZhiYi had been known as the third patriarch of Buddhism, but more widely known as the first to create an indigenous form of Chinese Buddhism.
