“Breathalyzers in Cars” Every two hours, three people are killed in alcohol- related highway crashes (Drunk Driving by the Numbers 1). There are many consequences to drunk driving, such as, arrest, property damage, serious injuries, and thousands of deaths each year. To reduce the number of fatalities, installing breathalyzers in cars of convicted drunk drivers is often brought up. Breathalyzers need to be installed in cars of convicted drunk drivers to protect others behind the wheel. Car breathalyzers stop a person from operating a vehicle. These hand- held devices, typically attached to dashboards and connected to the ignition, use fuel- cell technology to measure the concentration of alcohol in a person’s breath (The Breathalyzer behind the Wheel 1). Although they are made by various companies, all ignition interlocks conform to strict standards of accuracy set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (The Breathalyzer behind the Wheel 1). If too much alcohol is detected, the car will not start (The Breathalyzer behind the Wheel 1). Driving while intoxicated is becoming a major issue in the United States. Statistics indicate that nearly 1.5 million Americans are arrested annually on DUI charges, making it the number one crime which Americans are arrested for (Joseph R. Szczesny 1). Once the time has passed, one can test again. If the individual fails the test once more, the device will lock the vehicle down for a longer period of time (Shelly Wutke 2).
