There are few people in this world that will go out of their way for other people, but these three women did just that. These women influenced people to look at their way of life differently. The brave women stood up for what they believed in no matter the opinion of those surrounding them. They were determined to save people some from sickness, slavery, and unfair treatment. Each of these ladies dedicated their lives to something different, but their effects were the same: empowering, educating, and saving the individuals of the world. These three influential people are purely determined to help others. Sara Josephine Baker dedicated not just her time, but her whole life to saving lives and to public health. Miss Baker, disgusted by the fatality rates of infants, chose to aid mothers in all things babies. Saddened by the high rate of infants being born blind, she encouraged eye drops to be given to the babies directly after birth. With the help of nurses in New York City, she taught mothers to care for their babies. She invented a milk formula, so mothers could return to work faster. Baker even convinced New York City to license midwives before sending them out to assist in deliveries. She not only wanted to help babies, but older children too. She started her journey in an unexpected way. Laura Haviland was a white female born in Canada during the time of slavery. Later in life, she and her parents moved to New York. After she married, she moved back north to Michigan. When she moved to Michigan she started changing things right away. Dissatisfied and sickened by the treatment of slaves, she set out to not just adjust but free slaves from wicked people.
