Brave New World Chapter 7 Analysis

This passage is part of chapter 7 of the Book Brave New World. Being a key chapter in the protagonists lives, Bernard and Lenina go on a trip, a holiday and discover a place called the reserve. The society they encounter is very different from theirs. The World State's society values community, identity and stability. However the place where they ended up going hasn't evolved into the society of the World State. Huxley introduces us to a whole new environment for us (as readers) and for them (Bernard and Lenina). The action is seen through the mesmerized eyes of the two characters. This specific passage shows us a scene of women breast feeding. He isn't very comfortable but is somewhat fascinated by the scene presented in front of him; "What a wonderfully intimate relationship," he said, deliberately outrageous. He feels less ashamed than Lenina and doesn't mind making sneaky comments. He seems amused and takes the situation at the second degree. He humiliates lenina physical reaction as well but tries to stay as he is still out of his comfort zone: “Ashamed, now that the effects of the soma had worn off, of the weakness he had displayed that morning in the hotel, he went out of his way to show himself strong and unorthodox.” He is drawn to such a scene (Breast feeding) and starts questioning hiself - “what an intensity of feeling it must generate” He tries to project himself in such a situation and realises he missed something. However Huxley's judgement is felt throughout this paragraph as we can note a lot of irony. Using a dramatic writing style such as: “Lenina was left to face the horrors of Malpais unaided” And a depretiative lexical: terrible, awful, indecent … He creates a suffocating atmosphere mirroring the characters feeling: “crowding in on her thick and fast”, “The passage of an old woman with ophthalmia and a disease of the skin distracted her from her
