This passage is part of chapter 7 of the Book Brave New World. Being a key chapter in the protagonists lives, Bernard and Lenina go on a trip, a holiday and discover a place called the reserve. The society they encounter is very different from theirs. The World State's society values community, identity and stability. However the place where they ended up going hasn't evolved into the society of the World State. Huxley introduces us to a whole new environment for us (as readers) and for them (Bernard and Lenina). The action is seen through the mesmerized eyes of the two characters. This specific passage shows us a scene of women breast feeding. He isn't very comfortable but is somewhat fascinated by the scene presented in front of him; "What a wonderfully intimate relationship," he said, deliberately outrageous. He feels less ashamed than Lenina and doesn't mind making sneaky comments. He seems amused and takes the situation at the second degree. He humiliates lenina physical reaction as well but tries to stay as he is still out of his comfort zone: “Ashamed, now that the effects of the soma had worn off, of the weakness he had displayed that morning in the hotel, he went out of his way to show himself strong and unorthodox.” He is drawn to such a scene (Breast feeding) and starts questioning hiself - “what an intensity of feeling it must generate” He tries to project himself in such a situation and realises he missed something. However Huxley's judgement is felt throughout this paragraph as we can note a lot of irony. Using a dramatic writing style such as: “Lenina was left to face the horrors of Malpais unaided” And a depretiative lexical: terrible, awful, indecent … He creates a suffocating atmosphere mirroring the characters feeling: “crowding in on her thick and fast”, “The passage of an old woman with ophthalmia and a disease of the skin distracted her from her
Huxley’s first example of satire is that he shows elements of communism in the World State. Dictatorship is an element of communism and is shown in Brave New World by means of the World Controller, Mustapha Mond. In the World State, people “belong” to everyone else. Mustapha Mond, when lecturing students, says, “…’every one belongs to every one else’” (40). This thought in the novel is similar to that of communism where everyone shares everything. In Brave New World, however, Huxley takes this thought to another level. Sex, in the World State, is encouraged to occur with everybody. Even kids are encouraged to participate. People are scolded for having only one partner. Fanny, Lenina’s friends said, “’I really do think you ought to be careful. It’s such horribly bad form to go on and on like this with one man…’” (41). Lenina could possibly be punished for “having” only one man. This is how Huxley uses satire to exploit communism.
This is one of the many ways that Huxley uses satire to bring about his message, through the setting of a dystopic utopia, in itself ironic. To this end, the setting truly acts as a warning somewhat, in how “Brave New World’s […] ironic satire of a utopia warns us against the dangers of political manipulation and technological development.” (“Aldous Huxley” 1) One of the biggest features of Brave New World’s setting is the way in which the World State within it controls its citizens. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, Lenina and Linda are character foils of one another. Huxley foils these characters in order to show the differences not only between their characters, but also to show the difference in the societies that which they are accustomed to. Lenina and Linda were complete strangers and had never met; however, they share many similarities while remaining different.
Since this book was published in 1932, Huxley based his ideas of the free sexualization of women and the heavy use of drugs from the conusmerism and rising economic growth in America during the 1920’s. When Huxley wrote about the negative treatment of women in the “brave new world”, he was most likely referring to flappers, who were often characterized by their slitted skirts, short bobs, and their “debutante slouch”, made their appearance (Sauro). The “modern” behavior of the flappers, like their tendencies to smoke and drink with the men and obvious makeup, were considered improper at the time (Benson). In Brave New World, Lenina “[thought] of herself as meat” (Huxley 53), and women were often referred to as “pneumatic” and were judged by their looks (Huxley 60). The rising economic growth was a huge deal in the 1920’s because it led to excessive spending; people illegally drank because it was exciting, and “bootleggers (makers and suppliers of alcohol) became modern-day heroes” (Benson). With the extra money to spend and time to spare, people partied more frequently; these parties at the illegal bars were laden with drinking (Benson). In Huxley’s novel, the soma represents the heavy use of alcohol and drugs. People wasted their feeling away with alcohol just like how the citizens in the novel took soma to numb their feelings and

The first chapters of Brave New World are without any doubt ingenious. Aldous Huxley uses them to grab the reader’s attention wisely. For the time being, the core story is only just hinted at. Instead, the main focus is on scientific-like discourse, explaining the method of reproduction. During the Director’s speech, additional points about the imaginary society are revealed through minor details. The fact that there is a character called the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning, introduced in a rather casual manner, implies the whole tone of the novel later to be explored, including a distant, unemotional feeling of pragmatism. However, to Lenina and the World State, theses beliefs promote happiness with repercussions- essentially, they strived for eternal happiness, without ever having to experience any negative emotion. The ending of the novel may have been Huxley’s commentary on this belief; one cannot escape reality, and for the Lenina and the World State, reality would be the emotions that they are trying to avoid (such as sadness, anxiety, anger, etc.). Aldous Huxley is also sending us many warning messages with his novel. If we spend too much of our lives pursuing happiness through physical fulfillment, we will miss out on what is truly important, our relationships with other people and with God. He is also telling us to be careful with our science, or we may end up like the Utopians, mass producing identical citizens, then brainwashing them to think alike, and to think exactly what the government mandates. Huxley tells us not to cheapen sex through promiscuity, because it is supposed to be something to express a deep and undying love to someone, not a simple carnal pleasure. These were just some of the mistakes the Utopians made, all of which contributed to their lives being shallow and meaningless. They were not truly happy, because they misplaced their values and failed to see what brings true joy and peace in one's life. The apparent blissfulness in which they lived turned out to be nothing, their Utopia was not worth the high price they paid.

It’s when she actually does go out with Bernard that her opinion of him changes to being a really strange fellow. The conditioning of the world state has made it clear to the citizens that nature is something that is considered horrible. When Lenina goes to the Indian reservation with Bernard, she experiences seeing the native's ritual, to which she finds it terrifying and cruel. Lenina was still sobbing.
In most countries in our world, society has experienced technological advances to the point of being able to accomplish what Huxley envisioned. In contrast to Huxley’s vision, the moral standards of most nations allow all humans to enjoy basic human rights that embrace family, personal relationships, and individualism. Today’s society is able to comprehend how with the technological advances Huxley’s world could be a reality, but with the privilege of a democratic society, civilization would not allow the medical intervention for reproduction, the conditioning for happiness and consumerism. In his novel, women did not represent any authority in contrast with men. A “Brave New World” depicted women in a typical role in which men have a lot of women around them. In the Utopia that Huxley described, women are victims of discrimination because of their physicals appearance. It follows into the pattern of today’s society, like sexist stereotypes and women 's body image. Sexism in the novel is very visible. Men only valued women for their appearance, rather than for their intelligence. Huxley developed and gave more importance to male characters than to female characters. Female characters were undervalued by the author. Huxley changed many aspects of the female experience. Although Lenina did something as amazing as falling in love, it was not permitted in Utopia. The author should have developed Lenina as a stronger and more courageous
1) One of the biggest conflicts witnessed so far in the first 90 pages of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is the internal one within the main protagonist, Bernard Marx. Throughout the book, Bernard encounters a violent conflict within himself. He was born different from everyone else, and he finds himself many times questioning the system, he feels that there is much more to be/accomplish in life than just having sex and playing ‘obstacle golf’. Bernard is conflicted if he should share how he feels with the rest of the world and reveal his thoughts, or if he should just keep his mouth shut because all he really wants is to fit in. He just wants to be accepted among his caste members as an equal, even though he is not on the same par as them physically. Should he follow what he believes is right, or what everyone else believes is and what he has been conditioned to believe is right. Another conflict we see in the book is when Lenina is conflicted whether she should stay with Henry, a man she has been seeing for four months, or see other men for a change. To us, this seems strange, as when you find someone you like, you generally stay with him or her, but in the World State being with someone for too long is frowned upon, after all, “everyone belongs to everyone”, the hypnopaedic phrase drilled into people’s heads at an early age. She doesn’t know it, but maybe deep down she may have some feelings for Henry but doesn’t know how to act on them as feelings of love and attachment to one person is something unheard of. Should she follow her heart, or follow the norm of society.
Because of the place and development of this society, it has formed a certain alterity or “otherness” to it's culture that is vastly different than what we see today. It is all used as a blown up concept of what life is today, and even in the 1930s when the book was written. Huxley is showing where we have placed ourselves as a society and how we have set the direction of it for the future. Aldous Huxley sets out and makes true connections and assumptions that with time our own society is becoming more exotic from one generation to the next. We change in sexual morality, what we value changes completely and we begin to see our own alterity in the culture we have so blindly and carelessly shaped.
