Boychoir is a 2014 American movie directed by François Girard and written by Ben Ripley. This 103 minutes movie is about an eleven years old boy who have a special talent in singing named Stet Tate who lived with his single mother in a small Texas town. His mother did not have a permanent job, often drunk and commits crimes. Stet was born out of wedlock due to his mother affairs with a married man who then still gives them house support. Because of his unstable life, Stet grow up as a hot-tempered and troubled boy and often involved in fights and problems with his peers and teachers at school.

The movie started with Stet who laid his head on the table not paying attention to his teacher in a music class when the others were singing with the teacher. Unhappy with her students’ singing the teacher then cut them off and asked angrily for the time signature for the song. Nobody able to answer the question except for Stet but he just mumbled the answer to himself, not saying it out loud. Annoyed with her teacher’s blabbering, Stet stood up on his chair and sing the song with the correct tempo in a rude manner. After the class, at the locker room, his friend teased him about his mother. Losing his temper, Stet beat him with a dustbin and warned him not to talk about his mother ever again. This scene, right at the beginning gives the idea of how smart yet rebellious Stet is, especially when he was teased about his broken family. Another reason that makes Stet a rebellious child is also because of the bad parenting done by her single mother. This showed by the scene where Stet just got home from school only to discover his mother was laying on the couch, drunk with some alcoholic drinks around her. Stet then prepared his mother a meal and some water for her to take a bath. Not just her mother failed to give a good care to Stet, but she also failed to give a good care of herself hence, making herself a bad role-model as a parent.
