The joy of the word "booty" Who likes booty? I like booty, and I think we should all like booty. Whether it is pirate's treasure or the beautiful behind of a woman, booty is a fantastic possession. I come from the lower class section of Ft. Lauderdale and in that area the booty is most often linked to the description of the African-American woman's posterior. I have always used the word booty, but recently I was told that it was a "black" term. I was shocked to hear this, and when I inquired as to why it was a "black" term, I was told that I shouldn't use words like that because they make me sound foolish. I do not always use the word booty but in some circumstances it is very necessary to use it. In my opinion it adds emphasis in the description of the size and beauty of the butt. What could possibly be wrong with using a word that is supposedly a word from a different heritage? We use words like "sheik" and "entree" all the time. I believe that there are no "black or "white" words, some words just happen to be used more by certain races. We should not be limited to certain words just because we are of a particular race. I firmly believe that whether a person is black or white they should know the true meaning of booty and should know why many people are in love with the ever powerful booty. The word booty as defined in the New Dictionary of American Slang, is "esp. black, the female body as a sex object; the sex act; ASS." Where I come from, booty is a word that is used to describe an extravagant behind. From what I have learned and seen, booty describes the size, the thickness, and the luster of one of my favorite body parts: the butt. The word booty is so descriptive that when someone uses it is understood quickly and usually without discussion. I usually do not hear people describe white women or any other type of women other than African-American, for that matter, to have booties. Whether this means that they do not possess the qualities to have their posterior described as a booty, I do not know. I do know however, that I have seen women of various nationalities that have what I would consider perfect booties.
Naylor implies that derogatory terms have a twist and are a disguise of acknowledgement to her race. Although it was initially created to humiliate and dehumanize African Americans, ‘the n-word’ develops into a word that admires men of that race.
The words Negro, nigger, and nigga have always been a sensitive topic, yet it is a topic that needs to be addressed in light of the more common use of its vernacular. One word is used to describe a color, while the others are used to define a people. It’s very clear to many the negative connotation these words carry, but where did these words come from? Furthermore, is there a difference between the word nigger and nigga; and why is it that African-Americans now use the word nigga to degrade each other in today’s society? These words, in spite of their spelling, still holds the same degrading power as it did during the time of slavery, and they are still spoken out of cruelty and ignorance, but who is to blame? Can one still blame the Spaniards for considering people of a darker skin tone –Black? Can we blame the Europeans for perpetuating their hatred and ignorance of superiority over a race of people to the point they felt it lawful to define and dehumanize them? Or does the blame lie with the African-American race as we use this degrading labeling on our own kind, thus becoming the victimizer. Either way nigger or nigga are words that should be eliminated from the vocabulary of every human being.
No, my name isn’t Sha’Quonda, Fri'chickenisha or any other common “ghetto black girl" name that you may have expected. I also do not come from a broken home. My family isn’t on welfare. I’m not promiscuous nether am I a dumb person. Even though I don't fit within society's standards for a black girl, I am a black girl and I am also delighted to be one. Why should I be upset with something that I can’t change? In the words of Denzel Washington, “I'm very proud to be black, but black is not all I am. That's my cultural historical background, my genetic makeup, but it's not all of who I am nor is
As I walked down the street,I hear alot of people my age, older,or even youngers yelling out the word nigger. The word nigger are some of the most controversially terms used today. Some may say that they are just words, but it is understood that these words carry out discrimiatory remarks. In “The Meaning of a word” by Gloria Naylor
The word “Nigger” was a term used in reference to a slave. A slave meaning, you were the lowest scum of the earth, Illiterate and uneducated in every sense. Today, the usage of the word is spilt in to different context, it is used to refer to one another. A lot of children today use the word freely, not because they are ignorant to the history and putridness of the word, but solely because they are not really offended by it and the only time they hear it, it's being said by someone else who is of color. As I looks back over the years, I can’t really remember anyone distinctively ever calling me the N-word, or better yet, not in a derogative fashion. I don’t think that anyone has ever called me the word to my face or in hearing distance. Growing up in New York City, the only time I ever heard the word “Nigger” was from people who called themselves “Nigger”. I remember sitting in class daydreaming on the word, thinking to myself, “How could anyone call themselves a Nigger and be proud of it?” Yet It’s Hard to hurt me with words, but I had never heard that word used with such vengeances. What does this word mean in my everyday life?
Everybody has a different perception on how the N-word should be used. The N-word was first used during the nineteenth century to categorized African americans as “black”. The N-word used as “Nigger” or “Nigga” has evolved to have many different meanings. “Nigger” and “Nigga” have two different meanings. “Nigger” shows the offensive discriminative background that was used when African Americans were slaves. This was used to downgrade them as humans. “Nigga” holds the meaning of friendship within this new generation. It is not used in an offensive way nowadays. Some people see this as a non offensive word as others see it as offensive. If many people, including African Americans use the N-word then why is the word so offensive?
Back in the time period of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain “the N-word” was not a racial term, it was simply what African Americans were called, especially when they were involved in slavery. Mark Twain used “the N-word” because in the time period he wrote the novel, people did not know any better and nobody should change his work. Most of this controversy comes from Twain’s frequent use of the word “nigger” when referring to black slaves, including one of the main characters, Jim. Today, that term is considered a seriously offensive racial slur. However, in the setting of the novel, and during that time period, this is the term most frequently used to describe African Americans. Since Huck Finn was set in the south before
We should replace the n-word with the word slave as the n-word makes people feel uncomfortable. The n word has removed an American classic from many reading lists because it is highly controversial. The novel is the fourth most banned book in the United States as many African Americans have denounced the book as racist (Source D). People shouldn't be denied a classic just for the use of a single word. According to Source D, many
The N word, derived from the derogatory use of the word negro by Southern white slave owners, has been a controversial topic since the rise of hip hop in the 1970s. The N-word should not be used in casual conversations because it erases history, remains offensive, and is among the many unacceptable racial slurs. Though we can't limit first amendment rights by restricting the word, it should be taken into account as offensive jargon when in conversation.
My parents are African immigrants and I had it bad while growing up. I remember being taunted with terms such as: shadow, darkness, and the most dreadful one, African booty scratcher. Within the black community, there are some who prefer light
The way you say something, the context behind what you say, or the meaning of a word can have a large effect on the way it is used. The word n*gger became a derogatory word in the 1800s, when it was used to describe black people. In the 21st century, the same word has developed an entirely new meaning that corresponds with the idea of white racism or white supremacy. Samuel Clemens, formally known as Mark Twain, the author of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, grew up in a time when the word n*gger was used simply as a description when it came to black people. Slavery played a vital part of Twain’s early life, because like a lot of southern white families, they relied on slave labor for income. Twain grew up in a time of blatant racism and
The n-word is constantly mentioned in songs by rap artists and between people, the word is a problem in classrooms because students begin to realize how serious and controversial the word is towards racism instead of it being used casually in conversations and songs. The book was starting to gain controversy in schools as early as in 1985, local schools in a city of Illinois had the book taken off of the required reading list due to African American parents Waukegan led by educator John H. Wallace due to perceived racism that came with the book (Baughman). One of the reasons for the book getting banned in local schools was because Wallace claimed that, “[it] serves to legitimate the word ‘n****r’ and humiliate students who are forced to read it aloud,” when students read the n-word aloud they may feel uncomfortable and embarrassed (Baughman). As it can be seen, controversies began at an early time because the n-word was found offensive and racist to be taught at school, but what parents do not realize is that the story is helping their child learn about the past and the decisions made. Without the story or the n-word mentioned, students will not know about America’s controversial past and everything that has happened since to change the way people think about African Americans and their views as well as values in society. If The Adventures of Huckleberry
This has changed in the last thirty years with many black people accepting it and referring to themselves, and people who aren’t black as Ns. This may be a nonsensical double standard, but it should still be allowed. Telling people they can say the N word will lead to more people using it trying to be rebels, and then the problem restarts itself. Yes it is offensive and it doesn’t make sense why someone would want to be called that, but if they do let them do it. Some rapper eve respond to the fact they can’t play the N word on the radio by creating a word, ziggit, to combat the fact they can’t use the word they want.
Salty tears of frustration streamed down my checks into the steaming mineral water that surrounded me. No one noticed; no one cared. I was just another stranger in the crowd drifting along in Glenwood Pool. There was only one difference; I was alone. Everyone else in the pool seemed to have someone, and everywhere I looked couples were kissing! If someone had been surveying the whole thing they would have found happiness in every corner ... then they would have seen me; sulking in my corner of the pool with fat, old, wrinkly, bald men swimming past me repeatedly.
One more reason why using the n word is wrong and disrespectful is because the word was linked to slavery, people think that the word “Nigger” and “Nigga” have different meaning and so they think is right to say the word “Nigga” because it means “Dude” or “Buddy” when they have the same meaning as the word “Nigger”. In a statement Cornell Dews said that Nigger is what Nigga is. “Nigga is what nigga is. There is no getting around it. Consider this, the word nigger is defined the same in more than thirty different languages throughout the world.” Cornell Dews. Nigger or Nigga, what’s the difference?. Uproxx. Nov 8, 2007.
